By this concert the festival payed tribute to the great composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, from whose birth 175 years have passed this year. The audience heard Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture – Fantasy and in the second part of the program also his Symphony No. 4 in F minor. An excursion into the world of impressionism, Ravel’s Bolero, which Manuel Hernández-Silva performed with his characteristic liveliness and earned delighted ovations before the intermission, added spice to the program. At the end of the program the audience rewarded the musicians with a standing ovation. “It is a pleasure for me to conduct a program like the one this evening. The reaction of the audience was beautiful,” said the Spanish conductor with Venezuelan roots, who performed at the festival in Český Krumlov for the third time, after the concert. “It is one of the most beautiful places which I have ever seen. And the fact that I can bring this beautiful music here makes me a happy man!” added Manuel Hernández-Silva. After this impressive performance, a tropical day and warm evening, he was rewarded with a cold pint of Czech beer to which he had been really looking forward to.
