Jiří Bárta, violoncellist

I really enjoyed playing during the opening. I believe that the laser light “accompaniment” subtly enhanced Bach’s suite in G major. The light worked perfectly with the crowns of the trees which are here in the summer riding hall.

Jiří Bárta, violoncellist

Jan Smigmator, swing singer

I think that today’s opening evening was a complex of luxurious “musical” images. I regret not seeing it from the front. All the genres which were introduced were very sensitively connected. The atmosphere of the summer riding hall by the castle garden, the weather, the visual effects which accompanied the musical numbers. The resulting effect was, at least according to the reaction of the viewers which I heard about, superb. It motivated me superbly for the solo concert with a big band consisting of twenty-five members, which will take place in the Brewery Garden on 4th August. I am really looking forward to coming back to Český Krumlov for the festival and I hope we will send the audience into the right swing raptures.

Jan Smigmator, swing singer

Vlastimil Harapes, dancer and patron of IMF Český Krumlov

The opening degustation was sensational. The evening was set in a beautiful environment and accompanied by a spectacular, yet unobtrusive, light illusion. The projection of the scene in which the opera and musical numbers were sung was perfect.

Vlastimil Harapes, dancer and patron of IMF Český Krumlov

Piotr Beczała, Polish tenor

I started my career in Linz, which is not far from Český Krumlov. In the past I had the opportunity to visit Český Krumlov a few times and it always fascinated me. I was able to follow the gradual transformation of the town which went through an extensive reconstruction and I have to say that the result is beautiful. I also heard about your festival and I often listened to the enthusiastic narrative of my colleagues who had already performed here as well as friend who regularly visit these concerts. During open-air concerts we don’t have acoustics, so we are fully in the hands of those in charge of all those “buttons” who harmonize our voices as well as the sound of the orchestra into an ideal form. Another thing I like is that during open-air productions we can look into the faces of the audience, which is not possible in a dark theatre. In this way I can tell more clearly how the viewers like it already while singing. Thus, we have greater feedback and we don’t need to wait for the applause by which viewers reward us if they are satisfied. I think, at least according to the reaction of the viewers that the performance here in Český Krumlov was a success.

Piotr Beczała, Polish tenor

Sondra Radvanovsky, American-Canadian soprano

Český Krumlov enchanted me. It is an amazing place. I am glad that I was able to sing Rusalka’s aria here at the IMF Český Krumlov in Czech. It is the native language of my father. When I grew up, I used to hear the Czech language at home. My grandparents, my dad and his sister spoke Czech in our home but they never encouraged me to use the Czech language, so I never learned it. My dad’s favourite composition was Smetana’s The Moldau and it still makes me cry listening to it. My father passed away over 30 years ago and this composition always reminds me of him.

Sondra Radvanovsky, American-Canadian soprano

Leoš Svárovský, conductor

Piotr Beczała and Sondra Radvanovsky are great professionals and excellent artists. Sondra Radvanovsky’s Rusalka was superb. I was truly moved. I had to make an effort not to succumb to it, I then had to concentrate hard to conduct the orchestra at full stretch. It is rare to hear Rusalka interpreted so brilliantly. Both artists gave an amazing performance. It is an honour for me to have met them on one stage.

Leoš Svárovský, conductor

Jaroslav Tůma, organist

I know the local organ very well. It is Nicolaus Christeindel’s instrument. I have a special fondness for it because it was preserved almost in its original state, which is rare. I hope that when its reconstruction takes place one day, the appointed organ maker won’t make any mistakes and the renovation will not harm the instrument in any way. It would be a great pity. For today’s concert I selected primarily music by Adam Václav Michna. I think it simply belongs to South Bohemia. Almost everybody knows Michna’s name in our country. Who wouldn’t know his Christmas song “Chtíc, aby spal”. He composed such beautiful melodies that I was always sorry that he didn’t write anything for the organ. And so I tried to make music in the old style based on his themes in the modern times. Moreover, it suits the type of the local organ really well. Next time I could perhaps make an experiment and make an excursion into the more distant parts of Europe. It would certainly be possible to play something from Spanish baroque literature, especially from the 17th century. But I believe I could find different interesting contexts in which I could use some stops of the local organ for purely contemporary music. I will always look forward to coming to the IMF Český Krumlov.

Jaroslav Tůma, organist

Leoš Čepický, violinist, leader of the Wihan Quartet

It is a piece of cake to play in the acoustics of the Masquerade Hall and the audience was very attentive today. It is always a pleasure to play Janáček for us. For me, his second quartet is one of the best quartets ever written. Smetana’s second quartet, which the composer composed when he was deaf, is full of emotions, it has a beautiful Polka, gorgeous cantabile passages, so the fact that we were able to play these two composers, who were moreover complemented by Dvořák, during one evening, brought us great pleasure

Leoš Čepický, violinist, leader of the Wihan Quartet

Štefan Picúr Banyák, leader of the ensemble Gypsy Devils

We were really happy to accept the invitation to the IMF Český Krumlov. We consider it to be a very prestigious festival. The audience in Český Krumlov created a wonderful atmosphere, I believe that it understood our Carmen. We enjoyed the concert very much.

Štefan Picúr Banyák, leader of the ensemble Gypsy Devils

Christiane Noll, American musical singer

One of the first performances which I rehearsed as a high school student for our local theatre was West Side Story. I was one of the Jets. West Side Story was also one of the first musicals that I saw on Broadway. Later at university I sang Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and the real challenge was when as an adult I finally plucked up the courage to learn the aria Glitter and Be Gray from Candide. I was lucky to sing that song and many other Bernstein’s masterpieces at Carnegie Hall and around the world and now at the IMF in Český Krumlov. It was a beautiful concert. Thank you.

Christiane Noll, American musical singer

Dee Roscioli, American musical singer

Leonard Bernstein wrote so many compositions that changed the course of music as a whole. To be so far ahead, such a visionary, is a privilege of only a few. For me West Side Story is his most beautiful piece. Time has no influence on it, it will withstand everything. This is my first visit to Český Krumlov. It is a magical town and today’s concert at the Brewery Garden had a great atmosphere thanks to the environment, the weather and above all to the people.

Dee Roscioli, American musical singer

Hugh Panaro, American musical singer

I fell for Leonard Bernstein when I was twelve. I saw West Side Story at the theatre and since that moment I dreamt of playing Tony and singing those incredible arias as the star of the performance. Unfortunately, it never happened. So, I am really delighted that I can sing some of my favourite pieces from West Side Story in one of my favourite towns ever, in Český Krumlov. I love to come back to the IMF. This is the fifth time I have come here and I simply love it here.

Hugh Panaro, American musical singer

Darius de Haas, American musical singer

This is the first time I have come to Český Krumlov and I must say that your International Music Festival made a great impression on me. We dedicated today’s concert to the legacy of Leonard Bernstein. I longed to meet him and work with him. When I was growing up I loved his operetta Candide, his Mass and of course West Side Story. Unfortunately, I was not able to fulfil my dream. I moved to New York for work in 1990 and he died in the same year. A few years later I was lucky enough to make friends with the Master’s daughter Jamie Bernstein and get to know his family. We cooperated on numerous concerts and projects and Jamie actually produced my album Quiet Please, on which I recorded Bernstein’s songs Lucky To Be Me and Some Other Time. It is funny what happens in the world – although I never actually met Mr. Bernstein, his children embraced me and in all my humbleness I now feel a personal relationship to his musical legacy.

Darius de Haas, American musical singer

Randall Craig Fleischer, American conductor

For me today’s concert at the IMF Český Krumlov was a recollection of the time when I was Bernstein’s pupil. You know, he was my hero. I studied conducting under him from 1989. I really respected him and learned a number of things from him. He was a great conductor as well as a great teacher. He was something like my family. The memories of him are simply unforgettable.

Randall Craig Fleischer, American conductor

Patrik Červák, leader of the ensemble Francisextet and pianist

We really enjoyed playing at the Masquerade Hall and playing at the IMF Český Krumlov which belongs to the most important festivals in the Czech Republic is a great honour for us. Unfortunately, not many compositions have been written for our formation, for a sextet, so for our concerts we also select compositions which I adapt. So, the audience listened to, for example, an adaptation of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and the composition Danse rituelle du feu by Manuel de Falla. And because the repertoire for our ensemble is not too rich, we try to stimulate contemporary composers to write something directly for us. We performed the composition Pour rien by Miloš Štědroň, which the author dedicated to us, as a world premiere. The program also included a composition by author Sylvie Bodorová, who was present during the performance of her composition “Danza del diavolo”. We are really pleased about that but in front of the author of a composition we are always very nervous and wonder whether the author will like it. According to her reaction, everything went well.

Patrik Červák, leader of the ensemble Francisextet and pianist

Pavel Steidl, Czech guitar virtuoso

I perceive the IMF Český Krumlov as a festival of high level and it is a great honour for me to join all those artists who perform at the festival. I love to perform at the Masquerade Hall as it is of exactly the right size for the guitar. It is interesting that when I performed here for the first time, it was some time in 2001, the hall seemed really big just for me with the guitar. But today, when I have been here several times, it seems much smaller. I don’t know why that is.

Pavel Steidl, Czech guitar virtuoso

Jiří Pavlica, leader of the ensemble Hradišťan, singer and violinist

I called the program for the IMF Český Krumlov Musical Dialogues and it contained three fields of topics about which we sang. The first were love songs, my own, or, for example, from Leoš Janáček’s collection. The second consisted of songs about time. That is looking back and remembering different important events which guided us through our history. Thus, we touched the ancient time of the roots of Great Moravia and the legacy of Cyril and Methodius, we also remembered the collector of folk songs František Sušil, from whose collections, for example, Bohuslav Martinů drew inspiration. The last field of compositions was based on a dialogue with the viewers and we played songs according to their wishes. And by one of the last songs of the evening, ‘Ach synku, synku’, loved by our first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, we honoured the 100th anniversary of the foundation of our state. The audience was very receptive today and reacted excellently. We really enjoyed playing here. I love the festival in Český Krumlov. It builds bridges between music genres, it is open to other types of music than classical music, which is very good.

Jiří Pavlica, leader of the ensemble Hradišťan, singer and violinist

Javier Perianes, Spanish pianist

I have never been to Český Krumlov before but I heard from Manuel, with whom I cooperate very often, what a beautiful town it was, however, I didn’t expect it would be so fabulous. I have played with a number of important conductors and Manuel is certainly one of them. They are great conductors-artists but not all of them are able to accompany a soloist in the right way. You know, accompanying is a discipline in itself. A conductor must be very empathic, he must sideline his ego. When he conducts an orchestra with a solo instrumentalist, he shouldn’t let the ensemble drown the soloist. On the contrary, he should be able to let the soloist stand out in the correct places. And I must say that Manuel knows how to do that. When I play with him, I feel secure. We are both Spanish but the fact that you speak the same language as somebody else doesn’t mean that it will automatically be easy to cooperate with him. It is not about the language but about certain chemistry between you. You either get on, listen, understand, or not. And speaking the same language doesn’t help. It is common musical language which is important. I haven’t played anything written by him until now, but I have a fan in Spain who is Czech and recently she gave me a publication of Janáček’s piano compositions. I have already looked at it and when I have the time I will be more than happy to have a go at them. I wonder how it will go. I might come back to your festival with Janáček one day.

Javier Perianes, Spanish pianist

Manuel Hernández-Silva, Spanish-Venezuelan conductor

This is the fourth time I have come to the festival in Český Krumlov. But this performance was very special for me thanks to the program. I not only performed with an outstanding pianist, Javier Perianes, but in the second half of the concert I had the opportunity to conduct Janáček’s works. It was a great responsibility for me to play Janáček in front of a Czech audience, which knows him well. Before I met the program advisor of your festival, Luboš Herza, I conducted only Dvořák from the Czech composers. But thanks to him I learned to love also other Czech authors – Bohuslav Martinů, Leoš Janáček. For me Janáček is a combination of impressionist music in expressionist expression. And that’s what is very unique about him. In Spain we like Janáček a lot. I think it’s also because of the fact that his compositions are full of significant rhythms, which is close to the heart of the Spanish. I look forward to opening the next season with the orchestra in Malaga, of which I am the chief conductor, with both of Janáček’s compositions, the Sinfonietta and Taras Bulba. And they will play Janáček for the first time in 25 years.

Manuel Hernández-Silva, Spanish-Venezuelan conductor

Jan Smigmator, swing singer

I like the festival in Český Krumlov. I also visited it as a viewer. Last time I went to both concerts of trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. I have a personal memory connected with that when my wife and I started our honeymoon here in Český Krumlov. And now I am glad that I can perform at the festival as an interpreter. First at the festival overture and then in August once again with my swing program “Keep Swinging!” with my dear colleagues Dasha, Tom Gaebel, dancers from POP Balet and the Felix Slováček RTV Big Band.

We all enjoyed the concert in Český Krumlov very much. I was really happy to get the invitation to such an important music festival as the IMF Český Krumlov. I think that even the younger Czech audience has reached a stage when they are starting to listen to swing and starting to go to concerts of this music. When I looked into the auditorium in Český Krumlov it was proof of that. It was an amazing multigenerational audience.

Jan Smigmator, swing singer

Dasha, multigenre singer

I believe the last time I performed here at the IMF in Český Krumlov was four years ago. This year it was with a swing program and I am happy that although swing is music of an older “date of birth”, young musicians dedicate themselves to it and that it is still able to find its listeners. And such great listeners as those who came to today’s concert at the Brewery Garden!

Dasha, multigenre singer

Tom Gaebel, German swing singer

I cooperated with Jan Smigmator as well as with the Felix Slováček Big Band on the project Sinatrology in 2015. It is very important, when you make music like swing, for a band which really knows this genre to stand by you and I can say this about the Felix Slováček RTV Big Band a hundred percent. I met Dasha for the first time today and I believe that we got on perfectly. This is the first time I have come to Český Krumlov and I am impressed by the charm of this town and this garden where the concert was held and which conjured up a beautiful summer atmosphere for the swing evening.

Tom Gaebel, German swing singer

Felix Slováček, clarinettist and bandmaster

I have been cooperating with Jan Smigmator since 2015, when we made the Sinatrology project together. I of course know the festival in Český Krumlov but I am not sure if in the twenty-seven years of its existence I have actually performed there. Anyhow, I am glad that we both made it in time and I performed here with the Keep Swinging! program. The audience was fantastic, we really enjoyed playing here.

Felix Slováček, clarinettist and bandmaster

David Eben, leader of the ensemble Schola Gregoriana Pragensis

It was a pleasant surprise that the IMF invited us to Český Krumlov again after only a year. It is an honour for us and singing at the Church of Corpus Christi and the Grieving Virgin Mary is always a great joy thanks to its beautiful acoustics. We had the opportunity to present a varied repertoire there, which was closely connected to the personality of monarch Charles IV and which actually suits this venue also in terms of the time period.

David Eben, leader of the ensemble Schola Gregoriana Pragensis

Tanja Becker-Bender, German violinist

I have already performed at the IMF twice. The first time at the beautiful Masquerade Hall where I played the 24 capriccios by Niccola Paganini and the second time it was also a solo evening where I played Bach’s compositions. This time I performed with an orchestra, the outstanding Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra. We performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, which belongs to the repertoire of every violinist. I have been playing it since my youth but I keep on discovering something new in it. It is great to have the opportunity to give a concert in such an impressive place where you can actually breathe history as Český Krumlov is. Coming back to the Czech Republic also has a personal meaning for me because my grandmother was Czech, she came from Jablonec and Nisou. She also played the violin, she was actually the first musician in our family and I now continue in her footsteps. The fact that I give concerts in the Czech Republic is almost moving for me. Next time I would like to stay a little longer to be able to see more of everything here.

Tanja Becker-Bender, German violinist

František Černý, frontman of the Čechomor band

Today’s concert as part of the IMF Český Krumlov was actually a small celebration of our thirty common years which we are celebrating as a band this year. The band has become younger, the new boys also brought new energy so we are really happy about the new connection. We played songs from our new album Nadechnutí with Martina Parlová and Kumpan’s musicians. It was an honour for us to play here at the IMF in Český Krumlov. This is the first time we have come here and we are always happy to come back. Among other festivals we consider the one in Český Krumlov to be a fabulous and prestigious event.

František Černý, frontman of the Čechomor band

Petr Zelenka, film director

After twenty years I had the opportunity to see Lúčnica again and it was great. I know the Čechomor band very well, I made my film Year of the Devil with them. Today they played songs from their new album which I have listened to many times and today I could finally enjoy it live. The brass section performed by Vlado Kumpan Brass Music by which the sound of the band was extended this time was amazing. It is a different type of brass music.

Petr Zelenka, film director

Zdeněk Maryška, actor

This is the first time I have come to the festival in Český Krumlov and it has made a great impression on me. It is brilliantly organized. The closing evening was a dignified celebration of the 100th anniversary of our republic. The program of the concert was superbly conceived. We saw and listened to representatives of three regions – Moravia, Silesia and Bohemia. I will definitely be happy to come back to the festival.

Zdeněk Maryška, actor

Dear friends,

My greetings to the International Music Festival Český Krumlov have become a pleasant summer tradition for me. This year it is for the first time that I address you in my new five-year term of office.

I am really glad that the organizers did not forget about the fact that we are in the jubilee year. A hundred years have passed since our country gained freedom. A hundred years have passed since the fantastic moments when an independent Czechoslovak state originated, a great achievement of the tireless efforts of T. G. Masaryk, Dr. E. Beneš and M. R. Štefánik.

The Czechoslovak Republic followed up on the traditions of the distinctive Czech statehood. It is not by chance that the Prague Castle is called the seat of Czech kings, Czechoslovak and Czech presidents. Therefore, let us remember that a hundred years ago the independent state did not originate from nothing, suddenly and as a sort of novelty. The Czech statehood has experienced a thousand years of winss, losses, fights and peaceful development.

Music is the most amazing means of expressing joy, sadness, humbleness and respect towards our ancestors, fighters for freedom and builders of the statehood. So, when you visit one of the concerts which the organizers of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov have prepared, remember, dear friends, the 100th anniversary of the independence of our country. And while quietly absorbing the lovely tones think of the fact that freedom must not be taken for granted. That we must fight for it every day.

Yours sincerely

Radek Vondráček, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic

Dear friends of good music,

It was a great honour for me to take over the auspices of this year’s International Music Festival Český Krumlov. These are not just empty words – music has accompanied me and also my entire family throughout my life, it brings ever more precious moments of relaxation and the opportunity to forget about the worries of political life at least for a moment. Especially when performed by outstanding interpreters, and there are more than enough of them in Český Krumlov every year. Besides that, the organizers have been able to naturally combine several music genres at one festival, from the history till the present, so everyone will find something that is close to his ear and heart. All that is then crowned by the unique atmosphere of Český Krumlov – what else could we wish for… In my case to find some time to personally enjoy at least a part of the rich programme. I wish the organizers and the visitors favourable weather – and to all of you the most pleasant musical experiences.

Andrej Babiš, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic

Dear visitors to the International Music Festival Český Krumlov,

I think it was a fortunate idea of the founders of the festival to connect the magical environment of Český Krumlov with classical music. There are few places in our country where we will find such a unique environment of the historical centre of town, which every year attracts thousands of visitors who can admire the mastery of ancient builders. And not only that. They can also visit other sights in South Bohemia and thus help their development. From that point of view the music festival in Český Krumlov is irreplaceable and the fact that this year its 27th year will take place only confirms that this festival has become an integral part of the cultural life of South Bohemia and the entire country.

Let me wish you a beautiful artistic experience and let me express my humble wish – I hope that some other time I will be able to join those thousands of visitors to this music feast and listen to one of the concerts with the irreproducible backdrop of the historical town of Český Krumlov.

Milan Štěch, chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

I am a regular visitor of the festival. The opening evening was a beautiful invitation to the rest of this year’s festival program and it culminated superbly. Also, the closing evening was full of beautiful performances. The band Čechomor and Lúčnica are popular ensembles. Thanks to Lúčnica we were able to remember Slovakia, with which we were one state in the past. I am taking away a very nice experience.

Milan Štěch, chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Antonín Staněk, minister of culture of the Czech Republic

I have come to the IMF in Český Krumlov for the first time. I visited the musical and closing concert and I am taking away beautiful experiences. I think it was not only me who was impressed but also other viewers. As a native of Olomouc, I am glad that also Military Music Olomouc performed at the closing evening but I also enjoyed the performance of Lúčnica and Čechomor. I consider the idea to connect these three ensembles in one evening and thus celebrate 100 years since the founding of the republic to be very successful. The festival has a tradition, its loyal viewers and I am really glad that it exists with the support of the state, the region and the town.

Antonín Staněk, minister of culture of the Czech Republic

Adam Vojtěch, minister of health of the Czech Republic

I visited the International Music Festival in the past but this is the first time I have attended the opening evening. I was delighted by its concept. The evening was an interesting overview of many genres. I am looking forward to coming back to Český Krumlov for the concert dedicated to Leonard Bernstein.

Adam Vojtěch, minister of health of the Czech Republic

Kateřina Kalistová, deputy of the Ministry of Culture for the management of the live art section

I have visited the IMF in Český Krumlov for the first time and I really liked the program selection for the opening concert which connected different genres. It was a varied selection of music genres from which everybody can choose according to personal taste. I liked the visualization, the illumination of musical numbers which were performed today. I have never seen a similar combination of music and visual effects. And last but not least I was delighted by the venue of the Český Krumlov castle garden where the concert was staged and which added unique magic to the concert.

Kateřina Kalistová, deputy of the Ministry of Culture for the management of the live art section

Dalibor Carda, Mayor of Český Krumlov

The International Music Festival Český Krumlov 2018 will certainly prepare many unforgettable experiences for plenty of viewers who will visit Český Krumlov thanks to this musical phenomenon also this year. I hope that our town will also be a delight for the musicians performing there. The organizers have prepared a wide range of genres for this year. This year everyone who loves music will find the right evening for him or her which will be indelibly recorded in the summer diaries. An experience of beautiful music enhanced by the exteriors and interiors of our town will enrich the soul of all those involved.

This year the organizers will present new ideas. The official opening will take place at the Summer Riding Hall. Here we will be put in the right mood for the entire festival and we will look forward to magnificent opera arias at the Brewery Garden next day. Let us only hope that the weather will be favourable.

I am glad that the Czech-Slovak Evening is part of the festival program. This year we are celebrating 100 years since the foundation of an independent state for Czechs, Slovaks and other ethnic groups living within the borders of our beautiful country at the time. Many things have happened in those 100 years. We would prefer to forget some of them but even those are part of our history. The foundation of an independent state should remain firmly in our memories. All of us will certainly enjoy this evening with Czech and Slovak music and food.

I wish the oganizers success and beautiful weather. And above all I would like to thank everybody for preparing another year of the festival. I wish the viewers unforgettable musical experiences which the festival will bring and may they leave Český Krumlov in a good mood.

Dalibor Carda, Mayor of Český Krumlov

The organizers prepared a completely new format of the official opening for us this year. The program was superbly directed and full of ideas. The evening had its original charm. It motivated me to visit other concerts which the festival offers this year.

I really liked the musical evening with Leonard Bernstein’s music and I was delighted with the concert of pianist Javier Perianes. That evening also Janáček, who might be a bit heavy for some, was played. The Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra under the leadership of Manuel Hernandez-Silva gave an excellent performance. I also praise the program advisor for an excellent idea how to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our state with the closing evening. I am also pleased by the fact that at the concerts which I visited this year I saw a lot of people from Český Krumlov. This is a sign that they like the festival and visit it.

    Angela Gheorghiu, Romanian soprano

I haven’t had the opportunity to visit Český Krumlov yet but even after 27 years of my international career I still enjoy discovering new places and new audiences. I am looking forward to performing in the summer atmosphere of the apparently beautiful town under the open skies and to meeting the audience in Český Krumlov, besides that I will sing with my wonderful colleague and good friend Ramón Vargas. I really like to sing with him, he is one of my favourite tenors. And we will perform with the PKF – Prague Philharmonia, with which I cooperated at the end of last year in Prague when I was recording my new solo album of verist arias, which will be released in autumn this year under the name Eternamente (Forever) by Warner Classics & Erato. I hope you will not miss it and you will be curious about what I have prepared for you.

    Angela Gheorghiu, Romanian soprano

I am proud of the fact that I had the opportunity to sing at the festival in Český Krumlov with Ramón. Years ago we started our international opera career together. We have been friends for nearly thirty years and friendship in the world of opera is something really rare and I am very grateful for it.

    Angela Gheorghiu, Romanian soprano

    Ramón Vargas, Mexican tenor

The performance in Český Krumlov belongs to the most beautiful experiences in my career. Six years ago I had the honour to sing at the twentieth year of the International Music Festival and now I am coming back to inaugurate the twenty-sixth year with my wonderful colleague Angela Gheorghiu. It is an incredible place and the quality of the festival and of the concerts in very high. That’s why I am very happy to come back.

    Ramón Vargas, Mexican tenor

    Ramón Vargas, Mexican tenor

I performed in Český Krumlov six years ago and now once again I have realized what a unique and magical place it was. It is one of the few places in the world where the charm of nature and the beauty of historic sights are wedded. And even this time the atmosphere in the auditorium and on the stage together with an excellent orchestra, the PKF – Prague Philharmonia, was beautiful in spite of the weather which forced us to leave the stage ahead of time. I believe that I will come back.

    Ramón Vargas, Mexican tenor

    Maria Solozobova, Russian violinist

I am incredibly happy that I got the opportunity to appear at this festival. I chose Mendelssohn’s violin concerto because it fits into the whole program beautifully. It is a sort of sunny music, the audience likes it and it is suitable for a festival summer evening such as this one. The atmosphere at the concert was very pleasant, the audience here showed me its favour. I cooperated with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra for the first time and I really enjoyed playing with them. And when I add the breathtaking beauty of the town of Český Krumlov and first-class organization of the festival, what else could I wish for.

    Maria Solozobova, Russian violinist

    Conrad van Alphen, conductor

Today’s concert marked the end of my season this year and I have to say that it was a great ending with Dvořák played by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. I am also delighted by the level of the festival and by the beautiful historic backdrop of the town where it is held.

    Conrad van Alphen, conductor

Petr Eben, artistic leader of the ensemble Schola Gregoriana Pragensis

We know the spaces of the Church of Corpus Christi and the Grieving Virgin Mary, we have already had the opportunity to perform there a few times and we are always happy to come back. I would say that this concert is ideal for the kind of music which we do. Its acoustics are not too long and for polyphony, which must take reverberation into account, it is very helpful and also makes it possible for listeners to sort of interconnect with our voices.

Petr Eben, artistic leader of the ensemble Schola Gregoriana Pragensis

Helena Jiříkovská, first violinist of the Škampa Quartet

A fantastic audience, a great hall with beautiful acoustics, which carried the sound of our quartet beautifully.” About the selected program she said the following, “All the three works which we played are closely connected in terms of time. They were written within a period of about fifteen years. The most serious of them is probably Mozart’s quartet, which is called ‘Dissonance’. In it Mozart used very unusual sequences for the time, which then appear in Romanticism. Haydn’s quartet is on the contrary playful, already its subtitle ‘Nightingale’ suggests a lot. An interesting thing is that Mozart wrote his quartet before his predecessor Haydn and dedicated it to Haydn. And Beethoven’s quartet is his relatively early opus, op. 59. Every time we receive an invitation to the festival from Český Krumlov, we are very happy to come. Last time we played here three years ago. It is a joy for us. We loved playing here. The response of the audience was perfect. We had a feeling that we were able to communicate with the audience superbly.

Helena Jiříkovská, first violinist of the Škampa Quartet

    Mischa Maisky, cellist

This is the third time I have been here and I wish I could come here more often. Not only because it is a beautiful and charming town but also because of the fantastic festival audience. It is always a great pleasure for me. I played in Prague much more often but perhaps I prefer playing in smaller towns because every concert, every performance is a great event here. They are not spoilt by an ample and year-round offer of concerts here. Music is my religion and Bach’s suites are the Bible. No matter how long you have been playing, how hard you train, you will never get close to the core of that music. I always at least try to do so, it is a hard challenge but also a big satisfaction. I feel that the audience appreciates it. Some organizers are worried that this music is too complicated for their audience. In my opinion it is not really true because it always depends on how a person interprets it. When you play at an intellectual level, then you need intellectual listeners, but when you play with your heart, everybody who has a heart will appreciate it and it doesn’t have to be a big musical connoisseur.

I have to say that today the weather really gave me a hard time as it affected the climate in the hall. The stage felt like a swimming pool. And I am not a good swimmer, let alone on the stage. Not only was I sweating but so was my cello which I had to wipe during the performance so that my fingers didn’t slip on the strings.

    Mischa Maisky, cellist

    Chulhee Yoon, South Korea pianist

I really enjoyed the performance with Mischa Maisky, we met for the first time. The atmosphere at the festival is great. The town is full of tourists even from my country. The environment here is very pleasant. I am really glad that we played Brahms. It is beautiful, deep and moving music.

    Chulhee Yoon, South Korea pianist

Vojtěch Semerád, artistic leader of the ensemble Cappella Mariana

We are really glad that we performed our program at the Masquerade Hall of the Renaissance Český Krumlov Chateau. In our imagination we were able to go back in time, together with the viewers, to the Renaissance Venice of Claudio Monteverdi. It was in the Venetian palaces that this music of new madrigals was played. We were really impressed by the attentive audience. We would like to thank the festival for the invitation to these spaces and atmosphere. As an artist I have already performed at the festival with the sisterly ensemble Collegium Marianum but this was the first time for my Cappella Mariana ensemble. I believe that Monteverdi was a timeless composer. In his madrigal works he was a master of affect as he was able to express the pain resulting from unrequited love or, on the contrary, the joy resulting from requited love, which were the main themes of these compositions. As far as his compositional sequences are concerned, he basically used the harmony of the 20th century. As a singer I would certainly highlight the composer’s incredible feel for the language and its use in music. He really helped the singers by that and wrote it so to say for their tongue.

Vojtěch Semerád, artistic leader of the ensemble Cappella Mariana

Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, singer, violinist and frontwoman of Altan

It comes from old folk music. It is full of emotions you can identify with. And of course it offers strong melodies, because of which people listen to it. We came back to Český Krumlov after 11 years and we were very happy to do so. It is like a fairy tale here. I hope that today we brought plenty of joy and entertainment to the viewers.

Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, singer, violinist and frontwoman of Altan

Da Yoon You, South Korean violinist

It was a great honour and joy for me to play in such an extremely beautiful town as Český Krumlov and in such a pleasant and acoustically favourable hall known as the Masquerade Hall. I like Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons a lot. They are basically musical poems. Vivaldi added verses to the compositions, which are about the beauties of the country, and transferred them into the score.

Da Yoon You, South Korean violinist

Jan Talich, chief conductor of the South Czech Philharmonic

It is great that South Bohemia has such an international music festival of such renown in a beautiful town as Český Krumlov, which increases the attractiveness and popularity of classical music, as well as this region, which deserves it. I believe and I hope that the festival will continue to thrive. And we will always be happy to get an invitation. Da Yoon You is an excellent violinist, he has a very natural expression, great control over the instrument and clear interpretation so accompanying him was a very pleasant experience. I wish him that he may continue to be successful and perhaps we will meet on stage again one day. The selected program was a sort of ‘the best of Baroque’ and I mean this in the positive sense of the word. The audience heard other Baroque evergreens. We really played today’s program with appetite. It is beautiful and lively music and I think that also the response of the audience corresponded to the energy of the music which we presented to them.

Jan Talich, chief conductor of the South Czech Philharmonic

    Radka Fišarová, singer

The fact that we were asked to add another concert by the organizers was very pleasant for us. And it is actually a very pleasant thing that the adverse weather, because of which the second concert was moved from the Kooperativa Garden to the Castle Riding Hall due to the rain, gave us the opportunity to try and perform on two festival stages. And so we enjoyed two completely different and very beautiful venues and atmospheres. Therefore we are taking a double load of impressions home with us.

    Radka Fišarová, singer

    Jakub Junek, violinist

I am really happy about the concert. It was a great pleasure to play here with professor Matoušek. I have seen the program of the entire festival, every concert and the artists who perform here are an incredible line-up so the atmosphere here must be brilliant thanks to that.

    Jakub Junek, violinist

    Bohuslav Matoušek, violinist and violist

It was a pleasure to play here because the audience which came to see us was fantastic. The atmosphere was really excellent. The only thing was that it rained in the second half, humidity rose in the hall and our fingers slipped on the strings but I hope that nobody could tell. I come back to the festival quite regularly and I really like it. I believe that it is one of the festivals which suit me a lot. I always enjoy playing here and I play with joy. The artists who meet here are of very high standard and when I can count myself as one of them together with my amazing student, who is actually now my colleague, Jakub Junek, it is even more joyous. It was a very nice return for me.

    Bohuslav Matoušek, violinist and violist

Julian Rachlin, Lithuanian violinist and conductor

It was a great pleasure for me to perform with this orchestra, their performance was brilliant. I am glad that I was able to appear here, at this important festival, at which really famous names perform. The reception of the audience was very warm. I also appreciate the work of the organizers who have made it possible for this festival to be held for twenty-six years. I know what I am talking about. I organized a festival in Dubrovnik for twelve years myself. It was more chamber-like than this festival in Český Krumlov, so I know what a demanding task it is and how much work it requires.

Julian Rachlin, Lithuanian violinist and conductor

    Sarah McElravy, Canadian violist

It is really beautiful here – an inspirational hall, great orchestra and the audience was absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, we haven’t had much time to see the town, about which we have heard a lot, but I hope that we will manage to do so.

    Sarah McElravy, Canadian violist

    Chloe Lowery, American singer

Today’s concert was fantastic. The energy of the audience was incredibly energizing. I will surely remember today’s show for a very long time, it is one of the best which the four of us have experienced on stage. It was an honour for me to be part of it. This is my first time here, as opposed to my three colleagues, and I have to say that Český Krumlov made a great impression on me. The people were incredibly nice. I went to see the town and the castle and it was phenomenal.

    Chloe Lowery, American singer

Capathia Jenkins, Rob Evan and Hugh Panaro – American singers

What a party it was today! This year’s program was full of contrasts. The first half consisted of Broadway’s golden classics – musicals from the 30s till the 50s. After the intermission we once again ‘whooped it up’ and sang classic rock and pop from the 70s and 80s – Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Whitney Houston. Every time we come here, the reaction of the audience is bigger and warmer. We can feel that some of those present already know us and actually come to see us. This is the fourth or fifth time we have been here and it is still not enough.

Capathia Jenkins, Rob Evan and Hugh Panaro – American singers

Naďa Wepperová, Alena Průchová and Adam Koubek – vocalists

We are absolutely enthralled. It was an experience. And from the never-ending ovations it is clear how much the people liked it. We experienced the same joy on stage as the audience did in the auditorium. The people had their hands up in the air and really encouraged us. The festival in Český Krumlov simply has a great atmosphere.

Naďa Wepperová, Alena Průchová and Adam Koubek – vocalists

    Marek Zvolánek , trumpeter

In terms of emotions this concert was very intense for me. I chose compositions in which Maurice André, my big role model, excelled and with which he achieved the greatest fame. I have been listening to them intensely since I was seven and I have great respect for the perfect art of this master. I know that I will never be able to play like he did. Maurice André is an idol for me. This year I am coming back to the festival once again next week on Saturday for the closing evening so this time I will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful festival atmosphere in Český Krumlov to the full.

    Marek Zvolánek , trumpeter

    Pavel Svoboda, organist

I enjoyed playing the organ. The local organ is important even on a world-wide scale. It comes from 1682 and therefore it is one of the oldest in our country and perhaps also in Central Europe. It has been preserved in the original state. As it is such a historical instrument, it brings certain limitations, for example, in the number of keys and stops. The repertoire which can be played on it is therefore somewhat limited, for example, Romantic literature or contemporary music cannot be played on it, but in spite of that playing this organ was a great experience for me.

    Pavel Svoboda, organist

    Miriam Rodriguez Brüllová, guitarist

Even though the guitar does not have the tone range of the piano, which is originally played in the compositions, and it cannot produce the same sound either, the delicateness of the tone of the guitar highlights the intimate character of the selected compositions. For me the cello and the guitar are two instruments which complement one another superbly. They have a similar range and timbre so from my point of view they get on very well together. It is actually my favourite combination as far as chamber music is concerned. Gradually we try to expand our program with Petr so, besides the classical repertoire such as Vivaldi, Schubert, Tchaikovsky and others, we have started to include less famous authors at concerts, for example, like Gnattali today, and thus we open new horizons for the listeners. For me, it is always great to play at the festival in Český Krumlov. I believe this my third time. The audience is always attentive here, the hall is beautiful, so I love to come back and I hope this is not the last time we have met.

    Miriam Rodriguez Brüllová, guitarist

    Petr Nouzovský, cellist

It was a pleasure to play here also because we played for an erudite audience, so we felt the feedback. I was glad that I had the opportunity to introduce the different compositions in the program with a few words. It is a sort of bonus. The viewers learn something more about the compositions and I enjoy such ‘hosting’ of our concerts very much. I was afraid that it would be very hot in the hall, the outside temperature reached 38 degrees today, but it wasn’t so and the climate at the Masquerade Hall was bearable in the end. For me the concert was fantastic and I will have great memories of it.

    Petr Nouzovský, cellist

Jitka Čechová and Jan Páleníček, pianist and cellist of the Smetana Trio

It was the essence of the most beautiful pieces which Czech trio literature has to offer. Both Suk’s early Piano Trio Op. 2 and of course Antonín Dvořák’s ‘Dumky’, which are a masterpiece of trio literature. And Smetana’s Piano Trio in G minor is the flagship of the Czech trio repertoire. The atmosphere of the beautiful Masquerade Hall enhanced the musical impressions even further. It was an experience for us, we would say both cultural and physical because playing such a big program in such heat was rather demanding but nevertheless we played it with great appetite. Tonight’s audience was great and everything fitted in nicely – we, the viewers, the festival. It is a great inspiration for our future activities.

Jitka Čechová and Jan Páleníček, pianist and cellist of the Smetana Trio

Jiří Vodička, violinist of the Smetana Trio

I am impressed by the beautiful environment of the castle, the town and the entire festival. It was really nice to play here, there was good harmony among us. I was glad that I could feel that the viewers enjoyed it with us, they absorbed the atmosphere, they were touched, it was something that was so comprehensible for them that they perceived every second very strongly.

Jiří Vodička, violinist of the Smetana Trio

Frantisek Janoska, pianist of the Janoska Ensemble

We really looked forward to coming to Český Krumlov. This concert is very important for us as it is an outstanding festival and it is also a Czech premiere for us in this line-up. We play our own ‘Janoska style’. It was our vision to create something new, to approach classical music compositions in our own way. Our repertoire is based on classical music but because we were lead to improvisation from our childhood, these popular and well-known compositions are affected by it. Our main inspiration is the audience. The concert is over and rather than being exhausted we are full of energy! We could stay here for another month and play every night. The audience reacted to everything, from improvisation to my talking and jokes. We got all these ideas directly on the stage so it was absolutely spontaneous.

Frantisek Janoska, pianist of the Janoska Ensemble

    Daniel Serafin, baritone

I have known the ‘Janoskas’ for about twenty years. Our parents were friends. I love their style thanks to which they are able to deal with well-known composition elegantly and interpret them in their own way.

    Daniel Serafin, baritone

    Stanislav Vavřínek, conductor

If you get the opportunity to conduct Verdi’s Requiem in your life, whether it is the first time or whether you have done so several times, on the one hand it represents great expectations and anticipation, and on the other hand enormous respect. It is one of the biggest vocal-instrumental pieces which have ever been written. We played at the Brewery Garden, which might not seem to be the appropriate place for performing this composition. It was written primarily for a cathedral but it is also regularly played at concert halls or in open-air productions. Verdi’s Requiem is great Romanticism. In it Verdi is broadly orchestral, generously instrumental, it contains big solo performances, enormous orchestral and choir areas, figuratively said, it stretches as a wide arch of a big cathedral.

    Stanislav Vavřínek, conductor

    Terézia Kružlianková, Slovakian mezzosoprano

After Verdi’s Requiem I always have uplifting feelings. It is such a sacred composition. For us, opera singers, his Requiem is like a gateway to music. Whenever I have the opportunity to sing his Requiem, I am grateful for it. As opposed, for example, to Mozart’s Requiem, it is not performed that often, so it is a feast. Today I performed at the Český Krumlov festival for the first time and it was a special experience as we sang in the open air. The open-air atmosphere gave completely different dimensions to today’s performance to the ones which I experienced during more common productions at a concert hall. Music is perceived in a different way in nature. I am taking away a great experience.

    Terézia Kružlianková, Slovakian mezzosoprano

    Dear friends of music,

I am proud of the fact that I can once again take over the auspices of the 26th International Music Festival Český Krumlov. This fantastic event connects traditions and the heritage of past generations with the present day, because where else could you hear Baroque masters together with a Broadway musical and traditional Irish folklore? We have to thank the team of organizers, who prove that they are able to keep a very high level of the festival in the long term, for this. Last but not least we should also thank the National Heritage Institute, which is the co-organizer of this festival because the town of Český Krumlov with its state castle and chateau adds an irreproducible atmosphere to this event. Therefore I hope all the guests and interpreters will enjoy this unique festival to the full.

Bohuslav Sobotka / Prime Minister of the Czech Republic

Ivan Pilný, Minister of Finance of the Czech Republic

This is the first time I have visited the International Music Festival. I regularly go to concerts throughout the year so whenever there is something interesting, I am very happy to go. And the opening concert of the IMF with Angela Gheorghiu and Ramón Vargas was such an exceptional event. It was very beautiful. Of course I am a little bit sorry that it was interrupted by the rain but the audience heard all the essential part. And I also really like today’s concert of Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra with violinist Maria Solozobova, it is held in a beautiful venue, the Castle Riding Hall, and its program is very attractive.

Ivan Pilný, Minister of Finance of the Czech Republic

Miloslav Ludvík, Minister of Health of the Czech Republic

This year’s festival is only my second. Last year, during my first visit, I went to see Carmina Burana and I was so fascinated by it that I had to come back to this great festival atmosphere. The festival together with this breathtaking town, which by itself only evokes positive emotions, match beautifully. The International Music Festival Český Krumlov is in some aspects completely different and better than the Prague Spring! I am convinced that I will be tempted to come back every successive year. I came to Český Krumlov for the first time when I was fifty and I immediately fell in love with it. Since then I have to come here at least once a year and connecting the visit with the IMF is a unique opportunity. The program of today’s musical evening was very interesting for me. The musicals from the 30s and 50s are not so well-known, which was also the reason why they were a pleasant surprise for me. And the second half consisting of rock hits of the 70s and 80s literally lifted me from my chair!

Miloslav Ludvík, Minister of Health of the Czech Republic

Jiří Zlatuška, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

I haven’t seen the two singers sing live many times and therefore I was pleased to take the opportunity and see and hear them in Český Krumlov. Of course, I know them from different recordings but watching them live is certainly a better experience. I am a regular visitor to the International Music Festival Český Krumlov, I really like it here. I am a fan of music, I like listening to music, unfortunately I am not able to produce music so I relish it to the full at least passively as a listener. I enjoy the concerts of all the stars who are invited to Český Krumlov as it is really worth it.

Jiří Zlatuška, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Anna Putnová, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

We really looked forward to today’s concert. We were impressed by both opera singers. We are a little bit sorry that we could not listen to the concert till the end but that simply happens. The organization of the concert and the festival as such was great once again and we hope that the festival will continue to be successful and that the weather will be on its side.

Anna Putnová, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Věra Kovářová, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

The International Music Festival Český Krumlov is a smash. It didn’t matter that it rained, the only thing which I was slightly sorry about was that I didn’t hear Rusalka. I’m really happy that we came here because we not only experienced a pleasant evening with beautiful music, but we also met our friends. It has its peculiar enchantment.

Věra Kovářová, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

František Adámek, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Our impressions from today are unforgettable also because of the weather. Both Angela Gheorghiu and Ramón Vargas were absolutely perfect and the rain enhanced the experience even further. We will surely not forget it. The rain with the thunder and lightning added a specific and unmistakeable atmosphere to the whole concert. We spend every long weekend at the festival. What really amazed us was the brilliant performance of violinist and conductor Julian Rachlin. At the Castle Riding Hall he proved that he really belonged to the absolute top in the world. We are glad that we were also able to meet him in person after the concert when he joined the viewers and answered their questions. The meeting took place in a very pleasant atmosphere. Rachlin as well as his colleague, violist Sarah McElravy, are very nice and likeable, they are humble and they had a very interesting talk with the viewers.

František Adámek, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Miriam Němcová, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

I only have the best experiences from the first two concerts of this year’s 26th year of the IMF. Although the opening concert was disturbed by the rain, it did not influence my impressions negatively. The atmosphere of the evening was beautiful. One always realizes what a privilege it is to be able to see such top-class interpreters with the backdrop of the beautiful architecture of Český Krumlov and with the excellent organization of the festival. I saw Vargas six years ago when he performed in Český Krumlov for the first time and this year he proved that with him it is always a unique artistic encounter. I heard Gheorghiu for the first time today. Of course I knew what she meant for the classical music world and what an extraordinary star she was. It was fantastic to see her and hear her live. Both days spent at the festival were like a present for me, better than Father Christmas.

Miriam Němcová, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Lukáš Kaucký, deputy of the minister of foreign affairs

I am really glad that after a year I am once again present at the most beautiful music festival in the Czech Republic. And I believe that this is true not only for the Czech Republic but for the whole region of Central Europe. This is evidenced not only by those twenty-five successful years of this festival but also by the number of stars of world format who regularly appear at the festival and last but not least by the great favour of the visitors. The IMF is the family silver of the Czech culture and family silver must be protected and increased in number.

This opening concert surpassed my expectations. I was absolutely delighted with the first half. Of course I knew that both interpreters were of world format but what I experienced here today exceeded what I had heard about them. I am fully satisfied. And if the whole twenty-sixth year of the IMF will continue in this spirit, it will be a fantastic festival year. I hope that I will manage to visit some other concerts from the program offer by 5th August, when the festival finishes. After all, I regularly go to South Bohemia so all I have to do is choose. Last year I took part in the festival for the first time and it made such an impression on me that nowadays I am its regular visitor. I wish lots of luck and many satisfied viewers to the festival and I hope that the weather will be favourable.

Lukáš Kaucký, deputy of the minister of foreign affairs

Jan Zahradník, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

I am a regular visitor to the IMF, every year we go to two or three concerts. The opening concert of Angela Gheorghiu and Ramón Vargas was beautiful. It is a pity that it could not be played till the end as I was looking forward to Rusalka’s aria under the open skies, but that’s life. The orchestra played brilliantly and bravely under these circumstances and the soloists gave all they had. We are going home with beautiful feelings. The weather was not favourable today but I trust that we won’t have any more bad weather this year and the coming open-air productions will not be influenced by adverse weather. This year I am also planning to visit the concert of musicals titled Bravo Broadway!.

Jan Zahradník, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Ivana Stráská, governor of the South Bohemian Region

This is the third concert I have visited this year. Each of these was completely different. I also like classical music so the opening opera concert was a treat for me. Then I visited the concert of Radka Fišarová, who sang French chansons, which I have loved all my life, so I selected her concert from this year’s offer on purpose, and today I heard the concert titled Bravo Broadway!. Although musicals are not really my cup of tea, today’s program, which included musicals from the Golden Age of Musical Theatre of the 30s to 50s, was very pleasant for me. I won’t have to see anything else this year but I will surely not miss next year!

Ivana Stráská, governor of the South Bohemian Region

Pavel Hroch, Deputy Governor of the South Bohemian Region

For me this evening was a great experience. This is the first time I have visited such a concert and I have to say that Gheorghiu and Vargas showed supreme art here and the twenty-sixth year could not wish for a better start than for the opening in the company of these two stars. This year we are also planning to go to the closing evening because I have heard that it would be something exceptional so I am really curious about what the organizers have prepared for the closing.

Pavel Hroch, Deputy Governor of the South Bohemian Region

Antonín Krák, member of the Council of the South Bohemian Region

My impressions are beautiful. Not even the rain ruined them. The concert had an amazing atmosphere. I come to the festival every year, always for the opening and closing concert. This year I am also really looking forward to Irish music interpreted by the group Altan, to the musicals and to the closing Night of Baroque Masters.

Antonín Krák, member of the Council of the South Bohemian Region

Dalibor Carda, mayor of Český Krumlov

Every year the festival is an incredible experience for me. The offer is rich and varied. This year I visited the opening opera gala with outstanding stars Angela Gheorghiu and Ramón Vargas, who is by now well known in Český Krumlov, the Irish evening with the band Altan, which presented their Irish music authentically and superbly, there was a fantastic atmosphere during the evening of American musicals like every year, a supreme experience was the chamber concert of legendary Misha Maisky, the program of the chanson evening of Radka Fišarová as well as the concert program exclusively by Czech authors interpreted by our Smetana Trio. Nothing can replace such a beautiful musical summer at the International Music Festival Český Krumlov, it is simply a dream.

Dalibor Carda, mayor of Český Krumlov

Miloš Zeman / President of the Czech Republic

    Dear friends,

A year has passed and as tradition goes I have the honour to greet all of you on the occasion of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov, which I consider to be a great and praiseworthy endeavour.

This year I am very close to you as this salutation originated in South Bohemia, in České Budějovice. During my travels in this region I became aware of the amazing harmony there is between classical music and beautiful nature. Hills, valleys, rivers, streams, ponds, churches, villages and towns, all those are the tones of the symphony of our country. Let us appreciate beautiful music. It comes directly from our heart, it is honest and not malicious. In the present times which are often malicious and dishonest, music is really uplifting. Just as the sight of beautiful South Bohemian nature. I am really glad that the program of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov includes renowned names and as a whole offers an exceptionally broad creative palette.

I would like to thank the organizers of the festival, the artists and the visitors to the different events for having beautiful music close to their heart. Because our wonderful country will always need real enthusiasts.

Miloš Zeman / President of the Czech Republic

Vlasta Bohdalová, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

I believe there was no better way to end the festival. The dramaturgy of the whole evening was perfectly thought-out, during the evening we even experienced a surprise in the form of the levitation of the prince’s crown. I am really glad that we had the opportunity to walk through the entire garden until its rear part where few of us ever walk. The concert took place on a stage with Baroque set pieces which enhanced the authentic musical experience even further. A wonderful evening!

Vlasta Bohdalová, deputy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

I really liked the opening concert of two opera stars Angela Gheorghiu and Ramón Vargas. The weather affected the second half of the evening but in spite of that the concert was beautiful and the soloists proved their excellent reputation and they were fantastic. The Brewery Garden has its peculiar enchantment for me and therefore I really like to go to the concerts held there. You must allow for a certain risk of unfavourable weather during such a production, that’s life. This year I would also really like to go to the closing compiled Baroque evening in the castle gardens. Its program as well as the venue where the organizers decided to hold it are irresistible.

Martin Diviš, the managing director of the general partner of the festival, Kooperativa insurance company

Marek Singer, Chief Executive Officer of TV Prima

Yesterday I also visited Verdi’s Requiem in the Brewery Garden. The music explicitly invited us to stop and contemplate. It was a beautiful experience for me to hear Verdi’s music in an excellent interpretation under the open skies in the setting of Český Krumlov. The closing Baroque feast with the backdrop of the castle garden was a magnificent and perfectly organized event. I congratulate its creators. A perfect ending of the 26th year of the International Music Festival.

Marek Singer, Chief Executive Officer of TV Prima

Harald Hölzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Czech Republic

We assess our mutual cooperation with IMF Český Krumlov as very positive. The top-class level of the musical production very well complements the highest quality, innovativeness and last but not least excellent audio systems in our cars. We are really pleased that in the past years we had the opportunity to provide our cars to interpreters from around the world as well as the organizers. The opening opera gala concert with Angela Gheorghiu and Ramón Vargas, who will be accompanied by the Prague Philharmonia under the baton of Leoš Svárovský, really captured my attention.

Harald Hölzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Czech Republic

Lorenz Pronnet, executive director of the company E.ON Česká republika, s.r.o.

I have very good impressions from today’s concert. The performance by both soloists was great, they interpreted a fantastic selection of arias. I appreciate their effort and their performance in this not really ideal weather. Of course my thanks also go to the entire orchestra under the leadership of conductor Leoš Svárovský. The atmosphere of the entire concert, in spite of the rain in the second half, was perfect. I regularly go to the festival, I think this is the fifteenth time I have been here and it is great here every time. I like to come back. Just the number how many times I have been to the festival, probably says everything.

Lorenz Pronnet, executive director of the company E.ON Česká republika, s.r.o.

Martin Záklasník, managing director of E.ON Česká republika, s.r.o.

In the power industry we try to give emotions to things. And I believe that the rain, which was really strong in the second half of the evening, actually added more emotions to the entire evening, so I was delighted. I like the opera so I believe that I will become a regular visitor to the IMF as all of its years are inaugurated with an opera gala concert. So I look forward to coming back next year!

Martin Záklasník, managing director of E.ON Česká republika, s.r.o.

Oldřich Černoch, director of the State Agricultural Intervention Fund

The organizers of the festival managed to achieve something exceptional. We enjoyed the concert as well as the whole compiled evening with a walk in the castle garden very much. The illumination of the garden was also magnificent and the subsequent concert with Baroque set pieces during which Baroque music was played suited the setting wonderfully. We were actually transferred into the Baroque period.

Oldřich Černoch, director of the State Agricultural Intervention Fund

Ivo Hlaváč, division director of power company ČEZ

The organizers had a great idea to guide us through the castle garden accompanied by the sounds of music. It must have been difficult to organize so many visitors. We enjoyed the whole evening, which took place in a serene and pleasant atmosphere.

Ivo Hlaváč, division director of power company ČEZ

Jiří Sýkora, member of the board of Kooperativa insurance company

It is amazing how the final evening was prepared. I attended past years of the festival and I was really impressed by the festival closing tonight. It was a pleasant change. I was not only a conventional concert but the evening was rich with experiences, not only auditory but also visual, whether I am talking about the entire illumination of the garden, the surprising dance performance by the Baroque fountain or the levitation of the crown. Great choice!

Jiří Sýkora, member of the board of Kooperativa insurance company

Luděk Čermák, commercial director of the company ESSOX

I visited a total of five concerts this year and my favourite was Mischa Maisky. Today I kept my fingers crossed for the festival and hoped for good weather. I was at the opening concert so I know what the rain can do with the concert. What did not go well during the festival opening, went twice as well during the festival closing. Although I come from České Budějovice and often go to Český Krumlov, I have never been to the remote parts of the castle garden. The concept of the evening was original, I have never experienced anything similar. It had development, dynamics, we could meet our friends during the evening and tell them about our current impressions from what we had just seen and heard. It was really pleasant to spend an August evening in this way.

Luděk Čermák, commercial director of the company ESSOX

Pavel Pavelec, Director of National Heritage Institute České Budějovice

It was a great opportunity to assess what is happening at the Český Krumlov Castle in the long term, I mean that work has been done to revitalize the castle garden in the Baroque spirit. The garden is being gradually presented to the visitors also by means of different events including this year’s official closing of the 26th year of the IMF, during which the garden was presented in its full extent. For me this evening was like an achieved goal after a long-term effort and at the same time it was a unique experience for me personally because the atmosphere of the concert as well as the whole evening was unique. It was clear that all those involved paid particular attention to it.  I enjoyed it on two levels. The illumination of the garden and the music which was played brought a strong emotional experience. In terms of my profession, it was a demonstration of how the entire castle garden can work for the visitors.

Luboš Jedlička, former mayor of the town of Český Krumlov

I have been visiting the festival for twenty years already. I really like it. I was very impressed by this year’s closing concert. It offered Baroque music connected with the unique setting of the castle garden. We witnessed breath-taking visual effects accompanied by the sound of beautiful music.

Today’s concert was full of warm reactions of the audience which I am very pleased about. The program of the concert in Český Krumlov consisted solely of opera arias and the audience accepted it without reservation. The beauties of the Czech Republic, your cities and picturesque scenery are generally well known. But I would like to mention another kind of beauty – the kindness and heartiness of people whom I have encountered. You love music and I always have a feeling here that you enjoy life to the fullest and that is very nice. I will be very happy to come back.

    Danilo Formaggia, tenor

I have to say that I was totally enchanted by the town of Český Krumlov. Until now I had known only Prague and I had no idea about the beauty of Český Krumlov. Český Krumlov took my breath away thanks to its picturesqueness and atmosphere. I chose two arias for my performance at the opening concert of the IMF. And it is appropriate that I chose the aria from the opera L’Africaine which bears the name “Pays merveilleux… Ô paradis“, which means “Marvellous country… Paradise”, as the first one. And according to my impressions which I am taking away with me these words are suitable for the Czech Republic and Český Krumlov. Today is perhaps the fifth time I have sung in the Czech Republic and the audience has always been very warm here. That is why I wanted to say with my second aria, “from my heart to your heart”. I wanted to share what I like so I chose Puccini’s “E lucevan le stelle” (“And the stars were shining”) for this beautiful warm evening under the open skies. Even tonight I could feel how the audience enjoyed the whole evening with us. It was beautiful.

    Petr Vronský, conductor

During Sumi Jo’s performance today we witnessed artistically perfect blending of two cultures – Asian equilibristics with the European school. Sumi Jo demonstrated her vocal technical mastery but also emotional interpretation and a strong experience. After all she studied music in Europe, cooperated with great European artists, such as Herbert von Karajan, performed at prestigious festivals, for example at the one in Salzburg, and in the end she also settled here. I love to come back to Český Krumlov as an artist. I believe that everyone who gets the feel of this town will always be happy to come back not only as an artist to your festival but also as a tourist. Český Krumlov is an amazing town.

    Manuel Hernández-Silva, conductor

It is a pleasure for me to conduct a program as the one tonight. The reaction of the audience was fantastic. Today is the third time I have performed in Český Krumlov and it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. And the fact that I can bring this beautiful music here makes me a happy man!

Josef Krečmer, artistic director of Barocco sempre giovane ensemble

In the Baroque period perfect instruments, which are still played today, were created. The focus of our repertoire is still on Baroque music but we do not stick solely to it. We like to play, for example, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, who is a follower of Baroque composers in his works. We also premiered several contemporary compositions which were written for us. But for tonight’s concert we chose a Baroque repertoire which is perfect for this amazing hall from the middle of the eighteenth century.

    Jan Simon, pianist

Václav Hudeček has an incredibly positive drive and I always enjoy the concerts with him. Besides that Český Krumlov is really close to my heart; it is impossible to have a bad feeling from playing here.

    Trio Thalia, South Korea

This week we have another concert in the Czech Republic, we are playing with the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra in the Smetana Hall in Prague. But tomorrow morning we want to make a tour of Český Krumlov, we are here for the first time and we are absolutely enchanted by it, it is an amazing town. It was our violinist’s husband who actually came up with the name of our trio – we are three women and musicians, so it is very suitable. We play Dvořák quite often, it is a popular author in Korea. This composition is beautiful, though very demanding. We also play Dvořák’s Dumky. Tonight we decided to include one more Czech composition in the program to please the Czech audience – Josef Suk’s Elegy.

This is the second time that I have had the opportunity to greet you as the President of the Czech Republic on the occasion of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov. This salutation was written in the Czech Moravian Highlands which is not only my real home but above all a beautiful region. The Highlands with its diversity represent a kind of natural symphony. And there is nothing nicer than listening to the tones of quality music in a pleasant environment. Český Krumlov, infused with history, certainly is such a place. Just like the countryside in the Highlands, also the program of this cultural event, which I had the opportunity to get acquainted with, is not unicolour and every real music lover will find what is close to his or her heart in it. In the end let me wish the 24th year of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov as many satisfied visitors as possible. I would also like to thank the performers for sharing their art at this festival. Yours faithfully

    Miloš Zeman

Bohuslav Sobotka, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic

Dear fans of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov,

Summer months are usually connected with leisure time, travelling and getting to know new things, having time for our loved ones and for those we haven’t seen for some time. The International Music Festival, which will once again bring irreproducible dynamics into the historic streets of Český Krumlov, has such a property that it is able to fulfil these expectations. Thanks to the variety of genres and excellent international representation, it presents a traditionally sought-after experience for music lovers from around the world. The festival attracts both local and international guests with its live art and its locations in the gardens and halls in the centre, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List for 24 years, that is the same number of years that the festival has been held in Český Krumlov. This, I believe, is the biggest proof that the festival is an inseparable part of the cultural happening not only in this beautiful town but also in the whole of the Czech Republic, to which it gives an exceptionally graceful cultural face in the world. I would like to wish the 24thyear of the International Music Festival a smooth course and the visitors a great cultural experience.

    Bohuslav Sobotka

Daniel Herman, Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic

The International Music Festival Český Krumlov belongs to the most prestigious cultural events of this country. I am glad that the Ministry of Culture was able to contribute to the mosaic of festival partners. The IMF is a symbiosis of beautiful music, historic architecture and summer weather. During its concerts we feel a touch of positive energy in our hearts. My impressions from the opening concert of the 24th year of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov are exceptional. I believe that the concert was spectacular. After all, even the reaction of the audience showed that the people really appreciated both performers. The choice of repertoire was great, a very nice atmosphere with the Český Krumlov Chateau and its tower in the background, beautiful weather, so I believe we have made successful steps to complete the quarter century. I would like to wish the 25th year lots of energy and may the second quarter century be just as successful and may it develop even further. If something is able to put down roots in such a way to invite more and more visitors for more than two decades, it is clear that the roots are put down well and they may only spread. I hope that this festival will be such a blessing, a sort of dew for the whole region of South Bohemia-Upper Austria and perhaps even further because culture must be alive especially in the regions. And I strongly believe that the IMF will continue to be a blessing for this region.

Václav Klaus, former President of the Czech Republic

I am glad that I can once again be present at the opening of this festival. And I am pleased that in spite of the fears whether there will be enough money for this year’s festival, the festival director Jaromír Boháč must keep sponsors away. I thank all those who made another year of this festival possible.

Milan Štěch, chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Five years ago I had the opportunity to visit South Korea. I had and I still have a very good relationship with the ambassadors of this country, and therefore I know that Koreans love classical music and adore Prague (I remember, for example, their series Lovers from Prague) not only because of the historic beauty of Prague but also because of Czech music. So the fact that Korea has such talents, such superb artists like Sumi Jo, does not surprise me. They appreciate art there, it is a part of their lifestyle. And Sumi Jo’s visit to the IMF Český Krumlov only confirms that our relationships with Korea are excellent. The atmosphere of the concert under the open skies, such as this one, cannot be replaced by anything. You know, I am not a connoisseur of music but this concert with famous melodies is a relaxing evening in a pleasant relaxed atmosphere. I wish everyone had the same experience at least once. It makes everyday life more interesting. We should take advantage of the fact that such concerts are here. I am from South Bohemia and therefore I strongly support two towns (may the others forgive me), Třeboň (near which I live) and Český Krumlov. Both these towns took their chances after the revolution. The festival in Český Krumlov is organized excellently. We must of course also thank the sponsors, without whom it would not be possible. The overall climate in our country is changing. We prosper economically and this should also be visible in culture. I hope that it will happen. Culture in different genres belongs to our life and enriches it. Sometimes we are too focused on things which are connected with the economy but we should not neglect the spiritual side of life. Nowadays music is a global thing. I have seen performances of almost all the biggest stars of the opera and music world in our country, so this only confirms that Prague as well as the whole Czech Republic is nowadays the European centre of culture, including Český Krumlov, which nowadays has its own music festival history and I offer my congratulations for that and hope that it will continue in it in the coming years.

Jiří Zlatuška, deputy of the Parliament of the Czech Republic and chairman of the Committee for Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Physical Education

I am a fan of contemporary American composer John Adams so before the concert I knew Sumi Jo’s performance in the role of Mao Tse-tung’s wife in Adams’s contemporary opera Nixon in China. Tonight I had the opportunity to savour her vocal and interpretative art in classical Italian and French arias and she was fantastic. Such a program belongs to the atmosphere in Český Krumlov. I am very glad that I could be here. Sumi Jo was in such great shape that I was actually astonished how it was possible that she cooperated with legendary Herbert von Karajan. I am a fan of classical music – from the classics, old Händel to modern times – Boulez and Messiaen. I look forward to the organizers presenting something new again next time and perhaps one of the abovementioned names. After all their choice of the festival program is great every time I come here.

Moon Hayong, ambassador of the Korean Republic in the Czech Republic

It is well known that South Koreans have chosen the Czech Republic as their business base for the whole of Europe. Sumi Jo’s performance in Český Krumlov as the main star of the IMF proves that besides the great popularity of Korean industry in your country it is also music which has its supporters. I believe that Sumi Jo excelled here with a romantic opera repertoire. In Korea Sumi Jo is the number one musical personality and in the world she belongs to the most famous sopranos. In South Korea Czech music is really sought-after. For example, your Czech Philharmonic performs regularly in our country, Koreans love Smetana, Dvořák, his Symphony No. 9 is extremely popular, from writers it is Kafka and Kundera. I am really glad that the 24th year of the IMF also invited other Korean artists to perform, including the Trio Thalia and young violinist Ji Man Wee. It is clear that our countries cooperate well and enrich each other in different ways and I believe that this cooperation will continue to develop.

Jiří Zimola, Governor of the South Bohemian Region

Tonight’s concert titled “James Bond and World Musicals” was an experience not only for me but for all those present. This is proven also by the final standing ovation which is not always the rule. The people had a good time also because of the fact that the program was composed of well-known film and musical melodies. I am glad that more relaxed themes, such as musicals, have become part of the program of the IMF. I am also glad that other ensembles such as the South Czech Philharmonic and North Czech Philharmonic Teplice got the opportunity to perform here. In this way they make themselves known, for which the organizers deserve a big acknowledgement. For the next semi-milestone anniversary I would like to wish the festival to continue working, the organizers not to get discouraged by the current financial disfavour of different sponsors, to continue in their efforts and to be able to successfully organize also the next 25th jubilee year. You can see that the festival is attended to capacity, concerts are visited by lots of people, people like this festival perhaps due to the genius loci of Český Krumlov so it would be a great pity for such a festival to stop existing.

Dalibor Carda, Mayor of Český Krumlov

I am really proud of the IMF and of the town of Český Krumlov. I believe that Český Krumlov has been uplifted and the praise which this town gets always provokes me to come with more new ideas. Already now I can say that the coming 25th anniversary of the festival will also bring the opening of other historical spaces in the town, which the IMF will be able to use. In autumn we will open perhaps the biggest restored historical part of the town centre, in size it is between one fourth and one fifth of the historic core. It is a unique complex of three monasteries, which will be opened in November for all visitors. A visitors’ centre with an art-history-craft exhibition, which should attract many other people, is also planned. What can be seen of the construction so far seems to be a fantastic place. The atmosphere of the IMF concerts and concerts under the open skies in Český Krumlov in general has a long tradition. When it gets dark, the town gets an unbelievable atmosphere and when the illuminated chateau tower appears, it cannot be repeated anywhere, only here. For me Sumi Jo has that character of artists from the east, who have that characteristic gentle expression. She sang beautifully and clearly and perhaps I had never heard such perfectly pure and clear voice before.

Jaroslava Jermanová, deputy chairperson of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic

Dear lovers of the musical muse and Český Krumlov,

Every time something beautiful finishes you are sorry about it just like me. I have experienced similar feelings today on the day of the closing of the 24thyear of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov. A festival in a town which is unique thanks to its beauty, rich cultural history and a sensitive and responsive audience is destined to host the most important artistic events. There are many festivals but only a few of them have such prerequisites to belong to the best as the one in Český Krumlov. It owes its popularity also to the town itself. With its soul Český Krumlov is a truly musical town. It combines the rare harmony of old architecture with the meanders of the river Vltava, a harmony of esteem for the values of the past with the lively and dynamic present day, gracefulness of the town and the surrounding nature. This is what the festival was like as its program attracted our attention with works from classical music to musicals and other varied genres. The harmony of masterful performances by leading artists was enhanced by the inimitable atmosphere of Český Krumlov palaces and gardens. We have experienced a beautiful summer in Český Krumlov. May the memories of unforgettable experiences enhanced by the uniqueness of the beauty of the organizing town be with you, besides the thanks of the organizers and performers. You have been a fantastic audience and this is the main muse of every festival. Without a fantastic audience there are no fantastic festivals. See you next year at the jubilee 25th year.

Karla Šlechtová, Minister for Regional Development of the Czech Republic

Music is a word which connects the whole world. And that’s why we are all here. And next year we will surely be here too. Whether it will be our government, me or somebody else, but in any case constitutional authorities will always be here. I would like to share three of my thoughts with you. Next year we will celebrate the quarter century of this International Music Festival. A quarter of a century is a very long time, but very short for music. I am not standing here in front of you only on behalf of our government but of course also on behalf of the program of the Ministry for Regional Development or the CzechTourism agency, which is responsible for the promotion of tourism in our country but also abroad. And considering the fact that every year we make a financial contribution I would also like to guarantee here I will make sure the CzechTourism agency promotes and at the same time makes the International Music Festival more visible in the world every year. The agency has 21 branches abroad and I believe that this festival deserves it fully. As I have found out today, every year around 8 % of festival visitors are foreign tourists. Eight percent is not much and so we will try to increase this number next year to roughly 20 % for which the celebrations of the 25 years of the IMF could be of help.

    Eva Syková, senator

The closing concert of the IMF was fantastic for me. Both artists were superb, their performance was great. For the next jubilee year I would like to wish the festival to be held for another 25 years and to live to see its 50th anniversary. I wish the festival the attendance of other leading Czech and foreign artists and may it have more and more viewers.

I have had the honour to visit this festival for more than twenty years and although I have visited many other events, the atmosphere in Český Krumlov is very specific and irreproducible. The beauty of music is connected with the beauty of South Bohemia and especially Český Krumlov and this event simply makes sense. I believe that not only sponsors but also other state entities will continue to stand by the festival and support it. For social and personal reasons I really look forward to the opening concert of Sumi Jo with Danilo Formaggia and privately I will choose another one from the rich offer of the festival concerts.

Luděk Sekyra, owner of property development company Sekyra Group

I have a close relationship to the festival in Český Krumlov not only because I come from Český Krumlov but also because it offers me unique musical experiences every year. I have experienced almost all its years and I really look forward to the festival every year. I perceive the festival as an heir to the artistic traditions of the town of Český Krumlov and nowadays it is a part of the emotional side of my soul. It enriches not only me but all visitors and the town itself. I have a feeling that the festival is inseparably linked to the town; it is a part of its genius loci. It contributes to its atmosphere and nowadays it is impossible to imagine one without the other. The opening concert was exceptional, I was delighted by Sumi Jo’s performance. A strong response of the audience could be perceived. I am convinced that the next 25 years will be even more successful, although it won’t be easy as the standard is already very high. However, the organizers have always proven their qualities so I am convinced that the festival will continue to grow and we will all be proud of it.

Petr Pavelec, director of Regional Heritage Board in České Budějovice

My impressions from the closing concert of the IMF, which was held in the beautiful environment of the Český Krumlov Castle Riding Hall are very nice. For me personally the second half of the concert was more interesting. In general, it is always interesting to watch what young interpreters put into their performances, what energy they have. Often such concerts surprise you more than the concerts of established artists. From this point of view I liked Beethoven’s violin concerto better. Whenever I listen to classical music, I always think about what Beethoven would have said if he had imagined that in 200 years a violinist from Korea would interpret his concert so masterfully. For the next 25th year I would like to wish the festival to keep its high level because one thing is to reach a certain level but the most difficult thing is to keep that level in the long term. And further I hope that the National Heritage Institute, which is a co-organizer of the IMF Český Krumlov, will finally manage to install air-conditioning in the Castle Riding Hall, which would be a technical improvement that would bring more comfort for concerts held there.

Hana Machačová, member of the board of Kooperativa insurance company

This unique festival has gained great prestige in the 24 years of its existence, both the guests and the viewers like to come back here. It is thanks to the great choice of genres which we have the opportunity to watch during the festival. I believe that almost everyone can choose a concert here. And Český Krumlov is unique and adds incredible and unique charm to this festival. On behalf of the general partner of the festival let me thank especially the organizer – the company Auviex. We experience the preparations for the festival together and we know what effort and great enthusiasm are needed to keep the quality of all the festival evenings. I am very happy that Kooperativa insurance company was present together with the company Auviex when this festival was born. And because Kooperativa will also celebrate its 25th anniversary next year I expect that we will connect the celebrations and that they will be successful. I wish all of us to meet here in Český Krumlov at the celebrations of the 25th festival once again.

I had heard about the festival and I had of course known Český Krumlov as a fabulous place. When I got the invitation to open this year’s festival I did not hesitate. I am really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere I have heard so much about with my own eyes.

“The concert was an amazing experience for me. The weather was great and I hope to come back to this beautiful town soon. Český Krumlov is simply unique. This impression was intensified by the visit to the local baroque theatre. I have visited several baroque theatres but none of them has been so perfectly preserved. And it is a good thing that even nowadays musical productions are held there and give an idea to the audience what opera looked and sounded like at the time.”

    Jochen Rieder, conductor

The concerts with Jonas Kaufmann are something absolutely exceptional not only for the audience but also for the musicians and conductors. Standing on the stage we felt the great favour of the audience. I am in Český Krumlov for the first time and I am really delighted with the town. I have been to the Czech Republic many times and I like the indescribable Czech ʻscentʼ – the combination of nature, Czech musicality and beer. And all of this came to my mind in this town. I am really happy I got the opportunity to be here.”

    Tomáš Brauner, conductor

As a passionate canoeist I know Český Krumlov very well and I always remember my student years when we often passed through the town. It is a good thing that a festival which has gained world renown was born in this beautiful town.”

Jiří Bárta (violoncello) and Terezie Fialová (piano)

“The ambience of the Masquerade Hall was very inspiring for us, it has beautiful acoustics and a fantastic atmosphere. I have performed at this festival many times, for example two years ago with Bach’s Suites for Solo Cello. For Terezie Fialová this concert was her debut at the IMF ČK. Yesterday we both came back from the festival in Newport in the USA so the concert in Český Krumlov may be considered the conclusion and the high point of our tour.”

    Škampa Quartet

“We like to come back to this festival also because of the beautiful settings where we can give concerts.”

    Shiran Wang, pianist

“The cooperation with the Škampa Quartet was excellent, it was an amazing experience, in addition in the unique ambience of the Masquerade Hall. And playing the local piano was great. Dvořák’s Quintet in A Major is a beautiful composition, I really like it. If everything goes well, I will have the opportunity to play it again next year in Prague.”

Sándor Jávorkai, violinist, leader of the ensemble Gypsy Virtuoso Orchestra

“The audience reacted excellently, I really enjoyed this evening. Český Krumlov is beautiful, it is a pity that I have to leave tonight because I have another concert in Vienna tomorrow. Next time I will come for longer to be able to really enjoy the atmosphere of the town. I love not only Czech music but also Czech cuisine.”

    Ivan Ženatý, violin virtuoso

“I was very happy to play in Český Krumlov today with such a superb conductor and orchestra, I appreciate having been invited to Český Krumlov. It is a good thing that the festival originated and continues with ever greater success.”

    Ion Marin, conductor

“Český Krumlov is a beautiful town, literally an oasis of beauty. I thank all those who made it possible for me to perform here tonight. It is great that a music festival originated right here and has such a long tradition. It is a big success for the Czech Republic.”

Václav Luks, conductor, artistic leader of ensemble Collegium 1704

“We love to come back to the local Baroque Theatre because the setting is fantastic not only visually but also acoustically. We once again found out that in the 18th century they were really able to build spaces in such a way so that they do not hide anything and so that the human word can be perfectly understood.”

Jarolím Emmanuel Ružička, violinist, leader of ensemble The Classical Music Maniacs

“It is fantastic when a concert elicits response, when there is a spark between the stage and the auditorium like tonight and when the viewer accepts what the artist has to offer.”

    Vojtěch Dyk, singer and actor

“As a child I sang Carmina Burana at this festival and after that I kept on singing it and conducting it. I grew up not far from here, in Římov, and we often went on trips to Český Krumlov. I also went through the town later on when we were canoeing. I like the genius loci of Český Krumlov and the amazing mustiness of the old times by which the town is infused.”

Josef Buchta, leader of the group B-SIDE BAND

“This festival is one of the best we have in the Czech Republic. It was a beautiful experience for us, from which I will personally live for several weeks to come until the next concert.”

    Jae-A Yoo, flautist

“This is the first time I have come to Český Krumlov and I have never seen such a beautiful hall during my concert travels.”

    Jana Boušková, harpist

I consider the town of Český Krumlov our treasure and both the atmosphere of the Masquerade Hall and the warm reactions of the audience created beautiful moments.

    Natalia Gutman, violoncellist

“In 1961 as a student of the Moscow Conservatory I won a competition of the Prague Spring. This win opened many doors for me. At the time I met conductor Leopold Stokowski, who invited me to perform with him at Carnegie Hall. Since my first appearance at the Prague Spring I have always really liked the Czech audience. At that time I went on a tour during which I also visited Český Krumlov. I remember visiting the unique local Baroque Theatre. After that I didn’t visit the Czech Republic for a long time, therefore, I was really pleased to get the invitation to this concert in Český Krumlov.”

    Franz Schottky, conductor

“It was a wonderful experience, we appreciated the friendly reception and the great organization. I am looking forward to a tour of the town, which enchanted me, although I have only seen a part of it so far. This festival has a big name not only thanks to the beautiful setting but also thanks to famous artists who have performed here.”

Pacora Trio with singer Linda Ballová

“Český Krumlov is a fairy tale town. We had a good feeling from playing here, the atmosphere was pleasant, the audience was great.”

    Leoš Svárovský, conductor

“I was really nervous, the weather was changing every minute in Český Krumlov today and the idea that it would rain throughout the closing gala concert was not pleasant. But in the end the concert was beautiful and without rain, we had a great audience so I am very satisfied. I cooperated with the soloists for the first time and I have to say that we got on brilliantly, not only in music but also as humans. I think it was clear at the concert and we managed to communicate our joy to the audience.”

Anna Aglatova, soloist of the Grand Theatre in Moscow

“It was a wonderful experience for us. The audience gave us a warm reception, and although it was so cold tonight, everybody stayed till the end. Český Krumlov is an amazing fairy-tale town, we had no idea it would be so beautiful.”

Dear visitors, dear interpreters, I consider it a great honour to be the patron of an important cultural event. The International Music Festival Český Krumlov deservedly belongs to such events. I would like to point out, above all, that the festival, which takes place during the Year of Czech Music, gives space to different genres and a wide array of artists. I consider the fact that the festival concerts are held in a beautiful town full of historic sights a great asset. Together with the program diversity it creates a unique atmosphere. I wish all the visitors to the 23rd year of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov great cultural experiences and all the performers success crowned with applause.

Bohuslav Sobotka, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic

I would like to wish this year’s International Music Festival a lot of success and well tuned tones. This unique international musical project superbly represents the Czech Republic on the cultural map of Europe and has become a phenomenon for every lover of good music of different genres. I am convinced that the support of similar cultural projects is a way of presenting not only the historical beauties of our country but also cultural diversity and inventiveness. I hope that this year, the twenty-third already, will be at least as good as the previous years and Český Krumlov will be a place of a unique cultural experience for its visitors.

The festival connects this beautiful historical city with beautiful music and listeners and artists from all around the world meet here. Thanks to excellent dramaturgy and also a number of renowned names of interpreters it has become one of the most acclaimed music festivals, which highlights the Czech Republic on the map of the music world. It is not a festival for a close circle of devotees, it is a festival for the general public.” Bohuslav Sobotka also emphasized that the Year of Czech Music, which the festival program is part of, should contribute to the promotion of the Czech state and culture in international context but also to the development of the Czech cultural environment. “The year of Czech music bears the subtitle Creativity and Cooperation. Such a subtitle also suits this year’s program of the IMF Český Krumlov. Classical music is joined by jazz and folklore, Bach by samba, local interpreters by foreign ones,” remarked the Prime Minister.

Jan Hamáček, Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic

Dear friends of good music and visitors to Český Krumlov, I am very pleased that I can grant my auspices to the International Music Festival in Český Krumlov. The festival in Český Krumlov is being held for the twenty-third time already which is proof of the fact that its attractive offer is able to satisfy a large number of visitors year after year. Besides keeping a high musical quality of the festival, what I see as value added is the setting in the unique atmosphere of Český Krumlov. And this connection with the unmistakable historical spirit of the town offers a truly unique aesthetic combination. The festival will present the opera, symphonic and chamber concerts but also jazz, folklore, world music and even a musical. So everybody will make a choice. In the end let me wish the music festival and its visitors unforgettable experiences in the pleasant setting of Český Krumlov and last but not least also favourable weather.

Jiří Zimola, Governor of the South Bohemian Region

My relationship to the International Music Festival in Český Krumlov is as warm as my relationship to the town which has offered its background as well as its name to the festival for the twenty-third time in a row already. Its charming beauty has attracted and inspired a number of artists. They belong to Český Krumlov as inherently as the famous noble dynasty of the Rožmberks, a unique chateau with a baroque theatre and the river Vltava. The town, included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, has a rich cultural life all year round. However, I consider the International Music Festival the “icing on the cake” of the local cultural offer. The summer festival month traditionally tears down borders between music genres. In Český Krumlov tourists from all around the world shake hands. At the festival they are also joined by lovers of “music without borders”. I expect that I will attend the opening concert, I will not miss the Homage to Czech Musicals, which will be a joint evening of the management of the festival and the South Bohemian Region. I warmly recommend a visit to Český Krumlov connected with the visit to one of the concerts.

After the concert Homage to Czech Musicals:
It is a good thing that the festival offers evenings of different genres besides classical music. The delighted response of the audience of today’s concert confirms this. For me personally this evening was a great experience. I appreciate the fact that the IMF Český Krumlov preserves its tradition in spite of financial difficulties and that thanks to it we can encounter phenomenal artists and beautiful music every summer.

Dalibor Carda, Mayor of Český Krumlov

The International Music Festival Český Krumlov appeals not only to me but surely also to all the other visitors thanks to its fine choice of interpreters. The festival belongs to the perennial stars of the cultural menu in our town and when it takes place it seems that music becomes an integral part of the old town. I am looking forward to visiting Jonas Kaufmann’s opening concert, the multi-genre musical Czech Evening and I will not miss the closing gala concert of the stars of the Grand Theatre in Moscow either. I am glad that the company Auviex has been bringing the festival to our town for 23 years already. In this time the town has become one with the festival and I look forward to other musical treats which the organizers will offer to us.

“Recently I visited England and I found out that the fame of the Český Krumlov festival has spread there as well. I hope that all of us who can help the festival in the years to come, will realize its importance and will provide constant support to it.”

Lubomír Zaorálek, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic

Dear listeners, the International Music Festival in Český Krumlov has belonged to the most important cultural events in our country for more than two decades. Rightly we are proud of this festival as besides its artistic qualities it opens the door for us into the world and contributes to international cooperation and promotion of our country in the world. This was one of the reasons why I decided to grant my auspices to this year’s festival. This year is also the Year of Czech Music. Our representative offices promote Czech composers and musicians in the world and help them promote Czech music on all continents. They also promote our international festivals and therefore we are very glad that there is more and more interest in the festival in Český Krumlov among our partners. This is also helped by this year’s very interesting dramaturgy. Music is the universal language of mankind and therefore I wish the festival in Český Krumlov as many delighted listeners as possible and only the best international response.

Václav Klaus, former President of the Czech Republic

During the official opening of the festival:
I have witnessed a lot at this festival. I am always pleased to be here. I visit a lot of festivals in a number of beautiful places all over the Czech Republic but Český Krumlov is still the most beautiful one!

During the official closing of the festival:
I would like to thank the festival for the opportunity to be at this festival and at today’s beautiful concert. All those who contributed to the success of the festival also this year should be thanked.

Daniel Herman, Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic

In spite of being a native of South Bohemia from the neighbouring town of České Budějovice, it is the first time I have visited the festival in Český Krumlov. I believe that Český Krumlov is a festival town which creates a unique scene for the festival thanks to its beautiful sights. They attract thousands of tourists and it is certainly a good thing that culture is alive here also in this way. I am glad to be able to attend the 23rd year in person.”

Jan Mládek, Minister of Industry and Trade

“I would like to thank the organizers and partners for making such a great festival happen in Český Krumlov and congratulate the town of Český Krumlov and the South Bohemian Region on organizing an event which greatly exceed both this region and the Czech Republic. At the same time I would like to say that it is a challenge for Český Krumlov and the South Bohemian Region to make sure this festival continues successfully in the years to come. And it is, of course, also a challenge for the government to provide sufficient support and make many more years of the festival happen.”

Bude mi ctí, pokud přijmete mé pozvání na letošní ročník a mohu Vám slíbit jedno: Ať už to bude jakýkoli interpret, nebudete zklamáni.

A u těch dobrých projektů aby i nadále stála. Jsem moc rád, že si festival udržel dobré jméno a že festivalový štáb tomuto projektu věnuje nejen úsilí, ale dává mu i ducha a srdce.”

Vladimír Tošovský, Chairman of the Board of ČEPS, a.s.

The festival connects music with the magical setting of Český Krumlov in a unique way. I wish the festival a lot of satisfied visitors, a lot of fine and  successful interpreters and above all good weather. I am looking forward to the concert of violin virtuoso Ivan Ženatý with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, which will surely be a great experience.

Peter Duhan, Director General of the Czech Radio

The festival is a phenomenon. A real phenomenon of our festival music scene. The town itself belongs to the most amazing architectural jewels with a long history and the stay in this town is always a feast, especially when the summer weather intensifies the impressions from the meandering river Vltava with its famous weirs, the most famous one for canoeists directly under the Český Krumlov Chateau. The festival itself is a cultural social event which in a significant way surpasses the importance of the region. In my opinion it belongs to the absolute top among Czech festivals. If I remember the opening concerts in the last few years when, accompanied by “our” Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, such stars of the world of opera as Renée Fleming, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Elīna Garanča and Plácido Domingo performed, then even an observer less familiar with music will understand that it is an event of truly unique dimensions. Therefore I am glad that the Czech Radio has been one of the main media partners of the festival for several years and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra is the residential orchestra of the festival, as is the tradition at big world festivals. And which concerts am I going to visit? Without any doubt at least the concert of Jonas Kaufmann with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. This concert illustrates the profile of the festival and its significance.

Dr. Josef Reiter, General Manager of BMW Group Czech Republic

Culture moves the world ahead, it is a driving force which inspires. Where would our world be without symphonies, fine arts and architectural treasures? Including us at the BMW Group. We offer independence to our customers not only through our products but also through cultural projects which we support. Let us believe that the voices of those who are involved in culture are very important and inspirational in our society. From the past we can mention the BMW Guggenheim Lab, Deutsches Museum Akademiegaletie and also world famous film festivals in Hollywood, Cannes, Berlin and many others. In the Czech Republic we have a main partner of the International Music Festival in Český Krumlov for the third year in a row and this cooperation is a great pleasure for us. This year the world-famous artist Jonas Kaufmann, who is also a world emissary of the BMW brand, will perform at the opening concert. And naturally I cannot miss this unique performance. I really look forward to the International Festival in Český Krumlov. However, the cooperation with the IMF ČK is not the only one in the field of culture where we are active in the Czech Republic. We have been a partner of the Summer Shakespeare Festival for several years and this year we newly started cooperating with the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary.

Petr Milas, director of the division of administration of the support of quality food

The International Music Festival in Český Krumlov traditionally brings a rich program with leading artists across different music genres. I look forward not only to the performances and concerts but also to the overall special atmosphere of the festival. We are glad to be able to present the national quality brand KLASA and unique products which represent us in this beautiful setting.

Michael Fehn, Chairman of the Board of E.ON Czech Holding AG

The International Music Festival in Český Krumlov is one of the traditional events which we have decided to support. It is not always easy to find a link between an energy company and the cultural event of the year. I am glad that we are becoming more and more successful in achieving this together with the organizers of the festival. Here I could mention, for example, the fleet of natural gas powered service vehicles for securing technical matters at the festival which we provide to the festival or the product Eco-electricity which the festival uses. And last but not least it is also an offer for the youngest visitors to the festival in the form of a children’s afternoon full of music and energy which I am once again really looking forward to.

Pavel Pavelec, Director of National Heritage Institute České Budějovice

The enchanting magic of Český Krumlov consists, besides other things, in the fact that history and the present intertwine here in a unique way. The beautiful town and the chateau were constructed by our ancestors and the present fills it with current life and cultural events. And among them the International Music Festival Český Krumlov has been playing – both figuratively and literally – the main role for more than two decades. Every year Czech and foreign stars of the world of music are invited to Český Krumlov and with them the summer town welcomes also the specific atmosphere and glamour typical for big music festivals. I like to visit the town at this time of year and in this festive mood even when no concerts take place. In any case, just as in the previous years, I will not miss the opening concert, this time with the amazing Jonas Kaufmann, and as a true “conservative” I look forward to the musical homage to J. D. Zelenka interpreted by Collegium 1704 at the chateau Baroque Theatre. Hats off to the many years of work of all the organizers. I wish everybody a successful festival year.

Gary Mazzotti, member of the board of the general partner of IMF ČK, Kooperativa insurance company

“Today we are bidding farewell to another very successful year of this festival in the beautiful town of Český Krumlov. During five weeks seventeen concerts took place, we had the opportunity to appreciate beautiful music. We do not live in an easy period of time and music is such a kind of art which surpasses borders and offers a universal language. Music connects generations and different cultures. All the artists who have performed here are proof of this. Therefore it is an honour for me to thank all those who made this festival possible on behalf of the general partner of the festival, Kooperativa insurance company. We would like to thank the financial partners and sponsors without whom the festival would not be possible. We would also like to thank the organizing team which planned and implemented everything perfectly, often in spite of the weather. We thank the interpreters for the art which they performed. And last but not least a big thank you goes to Český Krumlov for the environment it offers. But most of all I would like to thank you, the audience, because without you the festival would not have any sense. See you at this festival in 2015!”

“I appreciate festival concerts as this one in Český Krumlov for their relaxed atmosphere and I believe that a similar event will attract a lot of people who would otherwise not step into an opera house to so-called classical music. For this reason I like music festivals very much and I try to adapt my repertoire to them. I take my hat off to the festivals which always keep a high standard – they give an inspiration to us, artists, as well as a once-in-a-lifetime experience to the viewers.”

“I would like to thank all the organizers and sponsors for making this year’s festival happen. And not only this year but also in the previous twenty-one years. I really appreciate it and I believe that twenty-two more lucky years await the festival.

    Kun Woo Paik, pianist

“Who wouldn’t like Český Krumlov? I was here already two years ago and it is one of the most beautiful places which I have come across. I honestly tell everybody who I meet how beautiful it is here. In this respect I am an ambassador of Český Krumlov.”

Marek Velemínský, leader of the Prague Guitar Quartet ensemble

“We have been to the IMF Český Krumlov several times and we appreciate having been invited because it is an important festival. We like to come back here. It was splendid to play in the Masquerade Hall, we are not here for the first time so we knew the acoustics of the hall and we were pleased as, after all, every time.”

Vlado Valovič, ensemble leader, Gustav Brom Big Band

“I am happy that this festival, which is truly a world event, is in the beautiful town of Český Krumlov.”

    Charles Olivieri-Munroe, conductor

“I want to thank the audience, which created a beautiful atmosphere. The organization is at the highest level I know and I have experience with conducting all around the world.”

    Tolga Kashif, conductor and composer

“This year the weather so to say ‘played for us’. It was a pleasant cool evening, ideal conditions. The orchestra and both choirs were brilliant, they have my admiration. A big thank you also goes to the festival for making it possible for me to return here and perform my composition in Český Krumlov.”

    Jitka Hosprová, viola virtuoso

“The festival is a very noble thing, it brings culture to places where people are currently staying and a number of people like to return here because of the festival and it always makes the festival more pleasant. Český Krumlov is, after Prague, one of my most beloved places.”

    Karel Mark Chichon, conductor

“The concert in Český Krumlov was a beautiful experience for me. I, just as Elīna Garanča, felt the energy which the audience gave me.”

    Aleš Kaspřík, violoncellist, Wihan Quartet

“A fantastic audience, great hall, beautiful acoustics, simply a luxurious concert. Český Krumlov is one of the most beautiful towns in the world, amazingly romantic, full of fantastic pubs, cafés, hotels, and everything. Whenever we can come here, it is a great pleasure for us. I like historic sights, so playing in an old hall was very inspirational for me. But to be fair, for example in Japan there are fantastic modern halls and it is also splendid to play there. But the historical Masquerade Hall has a unique atmosphere.

Jana Semerádová, flautist, artistic leader of ensemble Collegium Marianum

“I always return to Český Krumlov in my thoughts, I would come here every summer even as a tourist but now we have a baby, our daughter Josefa, and we have to look after her with the family.”

    Jiří Lukeš, accordionist

“I performed at the festival for the first time, however, before I had visited a number of festival concerts and I often come to Český Krumlov as a tourist. Our instrumental composition is untraditional, the audience is reacting excellently, I have a very good feeling from the concert.

    Miriam Rodriguez Brüllová, guitarist

“It was my first time at the festival and I had heard only great things before. The cooperation with the orchestra was excellent, it was excellently prepared. It is admirable that in such a small town as Český Krumlov it is possible to organize such a beautiful festival.”

Milan Lajčík, artistic leader of orchestra Virtuosi Pragenses

“The setting of the Masquerade Hall is really very beautiful, unique.”

    Adam Plachetka, bass-baritone

“I have a great feeling from the concert, the atmosphere was superb. I know Český Krumlov because I have gone through the town many times on a boat down the Vltava but of course I have also visited the festival several times.”

    Tomáš Brauner, conductor

“I value it as a festival which has great renown, people know about it. It is not only a beautiful town but I think that this event really has its place among the most important festivals.”

John Such, manager of Broadway musical singers

“What I appreciate about this festival is that it brings different kinds of music, from jazz to rock to classical music, to the viewers.”

    Morgan James, singer

“I am delighted by the enthusiasm of the audience, I saw that they were smiling at us and singing with us.”

    Rob Evan, singer

“Two years ago I performed in Český Krumlov with a program which was more in the pop style. Today’s concert in this beautiful setting was absolutely amazing too, I am really happy.”

    Randall Craig Fleischer, conductor

“It is fantastic to bring American music to the Czech Republic, the viewers in Český Krumlov can thus experience similar enthusiasm and energy that they could feel in America.”

    Petra Černocká, actress and singer

“At first I was very surprised what a beautiful space the Brewery Garden was. In short it is very nice here. The children were skilful, the adults were attentive. For the artists it was a very nice experience. And when the weather is good, there is nothing to be afraid of, the viewers always come and today there were lots of them here.”

    Karel Holas, Čechomor

“I have an excellent and beautiful feeling from the concert. We had the first fateful concert in Český Krumlov in the 90s without any idea about how many times we would play here afterwards. And the Brewery Garden is also fateful for us, today we have played here already for the fourth time, we like to return here. Český Krumlov certainly did not disappoint us and I hope that we did not disappoint the viewers either.”

    František Černý, Čechomor

“We have a very warm relationship to Český Krumlov. We not only come here as tourists but we really like to play here, we have experienced unforgettable concerts here. We practised quite diligently with Kühn’s Choir Prague and the Smíchov Philharmonic and we wanted to surprise the audience slightly by this composition. I think that we succeeded, it was an almost epochal experience for us too. How often are we so lucky to have around sixty people on stage? This festival is amazing and we are really happy to have been its guests.”

    Gerry Leonard, guitarist

“The Čechomor concert was a very pleasant event in this town. I have been a friend of Čechomor and have cooperated with them for a long time. This concert was very special, the group played with an orchestra, a choir and with guests as myself. It was simply an absolutely great evening.”

    Leoš Svárovský, conductor

“The festival in Český Krumlov is outstanding, it belongs to the very best Czech festivals. The quality of the festival is always created by the soloists and the soloists in Český Krumlov are always of the highest level in the world, whether we speak about Plácido Domingo, who was here two years ago, the four Canadian Tenors, who came last year, or Elīna Garanča this year. It is a fantastic festival.“

    Carlos Piñana, guitarist

„Český Krumlov is a magical place, it brings a lot of inspiration to the musicians and composers. The festival is very well organized and the people who organize it are great.”

    Sophia Jaffé, violinist

“The concert in Český Krumlov was amazing, a very special concert, beautiful music, my favourite program, great acoustics, the specific sound of the Masquerade Hall, the colourful setting.” The soloist continued, “This is my first time in Český Krumlov, today was a workday for me but in spite of that I visited the Baroque Theatre, I was surprised by the number of tourists, it is a very nice place and I am happy that I got the opportunity to perform at the festival.”

    Barbara Maria Willi, harpsichordist

“I admit that today it is my premiere as a visitor and I have explored the town slightly. Český Krumlov is like Mecca for a music enthusiast. We are standing in the Masquerade Hall where musical instruments are pictured and it is a hall about which at least five dissertations could be written as it contains a lot of information. In this hall we played in front of a mirror and even the sound and everything was such a reflection, it is a special feeling, the acoustics and the setting are inspiring.”

Pořadatelé sem dokáží přivést největší světové hvězdy operní scény. Všechny ročníky festivalu představily fanouškům hudby to, kvůli čemu by jinak museli objet celý svět. Tady to dostali v nádherné kulise tohoto výjimečného města.”

“The presenter Jiří Vejvoda said a nice thing, that Jan Čenský cannot come because he is acting in a play where there is no alternate. I understood that I am here by mistake because I already have an alternate.”

Miroslav Grégr, former Minister of Industry and Trade

“The performance of Turetsky Choir was a completely new interpretation of famous arias, it was impressive, fantastic, on the whole it was an invigorating evening. I believe, even from the reactions of the audience, that the topic of the evening was an excellent choice and that everybody feels satisfied.”

Mgr. Dalibor Carda, mayor of Český Krumlov

“I was absolutely delighted, the soloists were great. I am impressed by the conductor’s performance, it seemed charismatic and skilfully perfect. From the point of view of the town and from the point of view of the concert visitors it is important to avoid any problems. The weather was great, the floods came but it was before the festival and we managed to repair everything and prepare the town for the concerts.”

“I would like to thank the organizers, not only on behalf of Kooperativa, which has always stood behind the festival, and I believe that it will stand behind the festival in the future too, but also on behalf of all the partners which support the festival.”

Ing. Roman Zdebor, Technical Director of Škoda JS, a. s., member of Consortium MIR.1200

“The concert was a very pleasant surprise. I admit that I did not know Turetsky Choir but my expectations were entirely surpassed, the singers were amazing, I really enjoyed it.”

Ing. Vladimír Tošovský, Chairman of the Board, ČEPS, a. s.

“I assess the cooperation with the festival very positively in the long term. It is an opportunity to meet our guests in a beautiful setting, during beautiful experiences and this put together embodies this festival.”

Prof. Michal Mejstřík, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Český Aeroholding, a. s.

“Elīna Garanča’s performance was appealing, not only because of the interpretation itself but also because of her vocal expression. Her expression was very well complemented by the environment of the Brewery Garden and charming Český Krumlov as a whole, so it was an exceptionally successful evening. I look forward to visiting the festival again next year.”

Ing. Jan Procházka, Managing Director, EGAP, a. s.

“This is the second time I have visited the festival. It is a beautiful event, high quality music and a really exceptionally beautiful setting.”

Ing. Oldřich Černoch, CSc., advisor to minister of agriculture, advisor to director of State Agricultural Intervention Fund

“I have visited the festival in Český Krumlov several times already, I have a very positive relationship to it. Today’s concert was amazing, it had drive and a great atmosphere, in my opinion it was suitable for the official closing. I see a parallel between this festival and what we present here, that is products with the Klasa and Regional Food trademark. Although it is an international festival, it is supported by Czech companies, which is good.”

Ing. Luboš Jedlička, head of municipality energy sales, company E.ON

“Tonight’s concert was the culmination of the whole twenty-second year of the festival, I looked forward especially to the second part, ʻDestinyʼ. It really impressed me. And not only the last concert is important, all the other concerts are important. I have been visiting the festival for more than 11 years so I can compare and I think the level is growing every year.”

“I’ve felt very well, especially thanks to the great and friendly atmosphere here. Thank you, spectators, for warmth with which you have welcomed me. I appreciate it and I understand today’s performance as a good finale of a strenuous season after which I will enjoy a few weeks of free time. I will join those who will flee London to avoid chaos that the Summer Olympics will inevitably cause in the streets. And I will relax before new artistic challenges that await me in fall.”

    Dmitri Hvorostovsky

    Václav Hudeček

“The congratulation night, which IMF Český Krumlov has prepared for me, is something beautiful. I really appreciate it. I’m touched for many reasons: I have friends around me on the stage as well as in the auditorium, I can still play and today I play at the best music festival in this country. In a city the beauty of which can compete with Venice and other jewels – in Český Krumlov.”

    Václav Hudeček

    Konstantin Scherbakov

“Reactions of the audience were very warm and I believe that music has touched all of us. I’ve been completely amazed by the musicality of the Symphonic Orchestra of the Czech Radio and I thank the festival for this experience.”

    Konstantin Scherbakov

    Sanghee Cheong

“I’m really glad to be able to play again in Český Krumlov after the last year’s unforgettable cooperation with violoncellist Misha Maisky. It is great to have an opportunity to have a concert here again with great artists.”

    Sanghee Cheong

    Jiří Bárta

“Someone likes to take a rest during summer months, they enjoy warmth and sun. I, on the contrary, like performing because I am full of energy which I lack when it is cold and dark in the winter. I played at the Český Krumlov festival when it was very young and it was honor for me. Therefore I like to return whenever I’m invited and I always try to prepare a little different evening.”

    Jiří Bárta

    Bohuslav Matoušek

“Český Krumlov has been very close to my heart for a long time already. In nearby Zlatá Koruna I prepare regular interpretation courses and I always like to come to the city which has been rightfully included in the list of UNESCO sights. I like it even better if I can play at the well established and prestigious festival.”

    Bohuslav Matoušek

    Marko Marković

“The atmosphere, stage, concert organization, how everyone waited for us, simply everything was at a very high and professional level. We liked the environment here very much.”

    Marko Marković

    Panoch’s quartet

“We have already performed at the Český Krumlov festival several times and there has always been exceptional atmosphere and a lot of people. Demand for this festival is amazing and whenever we have an opportunity to come here, we are glad and appreciate it very much. As a quartet we like environments with good acoustics, which the Masquerade Hall certainly has.”

    Panoch’s quartet

    Otto Sauter

“To perform at places full of history – it is much more than just a concert. Such places have their atmosphere which is reflected even by the music. Both the musicians and spectators feel it. Therefore, I like playing at such venues and Český Krumlov has completely impressed me, the city is unbelievable! I want to thank to the festival very much for this opportunity.”

    Otto Sauter

    Roman Patočka

“I’ve performed several times at the festival, always in the Castle Riding Hall. It was the first time that I’ve played in the Masquerade Hall and I hope I’ll come back soon. It has good acoustics, it is ideal for this type of a concert and it supports the atmosphere. The spectators were great and I enjoyed playing with the Praga Camerata ensemble, I found great understanding with them – and not only as far as music is considered. Český Krumlov is a charming place and I’m really glad that I can be here again and soak in energy. Seeing the city always calms me down and puts me in a good mood, I really like coming back.”

    Roman Patočka

    Canadian Tenors

“Being here is like a dream, it is unbelievable. Český Krumlov is a beautiful city. We want to share our music with the Czech audience. The performance in the Czech Republic opens new horizons to us. It is an honor for us to perform here, in addition at the last concert of the festival, especially knowing that it was Placido Domingo who closed the festival last year. We highly appreciate the opportunity to follow his footsteps.”

    Canadian Tenors

    Leoš Svárovský

“The charisma of Český Krumlov is quite a once-in-life-time-experience, I always look forward to coming here, in the summer for the festival but even in the winter, the city is always different, breath taking. After all, the Canadian Tenors told me: Mr. conductor, it is an amazing city, if we could choose a place on the face of the Earth, we would live in Český Krumlov!”

    Leoš Svárovský

    José Cura

“I like getting to know new places but I also like coming back to the old ones. I’ve performed in Český Krumlov three times and I will always like to come back if an interesting new project is realized, no matter if it is a concert or theater. I highly appreciate professionalism of all participants.”

    José Cura

Jiří Šesták, director of South Bohemian Theater

“I’m glad that we have witnessed one of the great theater experiences thanks to which our life becomes nicer and nobler. Our fate is to try to intermediate such experiences to you. And I would like to thank to Jaromír Boháč that the cooperation of the theater and the festival can go on.”

I want to congratulate to the International Music Festival and all its authors for the preparation of program of very high quality again. I always consider it a small miracle that so many quality festivals are organized in our country and it is no wonder that the one in Český Krumlov is one of the best.”

Prof. Václav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic

Miroslava Němcová, chairwoman of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

“It is exceptionally hard to provide finances for a festival and keep it at a high artistic level as we can experience here. It is simply a brand of the top quality. It is good that the festival does not offer only concert experiences but that it provides a much wider scale of art experiences – scenic and theater ones.”

Miroslava Němcová, chairwoman of the Parliament of the Czech Republic

Martin Kuba, Minister of Industry and Trade

“As a citizen of South Bohemia, I am proud of the fact that here, in Český Krumlov, there is a festival that reaches top world quality. Congratulations go to the entire realization team, which makes sure that we can meet here every year and bring home experiences of real art.”

Dalibor Carda, Mayor of the city of Český Krumlov

“The 21st year of IMF Český Krumlov is history and I am really proud that the scenery of Český Krumlov could provide framework for this beautiful festival. On the stage as well as in the auditorium, you could hear many languages but one was universal – the language of music. Exceptional music performed by excellent players. And I would like to express my thanks to the organizers for it.”

Dalibor Carda, Mayor of the city of Český Krumlov

Cooperation with Auviex agency is always very constructive and beneficial.”

    Vladimír Tošovský, CEO, ČEPS, a.s.

    Josef Reiter, CEO, BMW Group

“Culture motivates and inspires. What would our world be about without symphonies and other works of art? BMW uses inspiration by works of art all around the world and it is therefore logical that we cooperate with this festival.”

    Josef Reiter, CEO, BMW Group

JinHwan Kim, CEO, Samsung Electronics Czech and Slovak

“We appreciate the possibility to cooperate with IMF Český Krumlov, which is one of the most important cultural events in the Czech Republic. JinHwan Kim, CEO, Samsung Electronics Czech and Slovak

Michael Fehn, chairman of the board, E.ON Holding AG

“For me the festival is a once-in-a-lifetime experience every year. As it is turning adult, being twenty-one years old, it has a bright future in front of itself. I personally admire that it manages to invite so many famous musicians and create program at a world quality level. I wish for it and expect of it what it has offered so far: professional quality and one-hundred-percent performance of the players as well as the organizers. And I can promise that we will remain faithful to the festival.”

Michael Fehn, chairman of the board, E.ON Holding AG

Hana Machačová, member of the board, deputy CEO, Kooperativa pojišťovna, a.s., Vienna Insurance Group

“We experienced a great festival this year where everyone could find something of their interest. I therefore thank to the organizers for their success in preparing for us excellent experiences that we will think for the entire following year. The festival has successfully entered the third decade and I wish for it to continue these experiences in many following years.”

Hana Machačová, member of the board, deputy CEO, Kooperativa pojišťovna, a.s., Vienna Insurance Group

Martin Diviš, CEO and chairman of the board, Kooperativa pojišťovna, a.s., Vienna Insurance Group – general partner of IMF ČK

“I am really proud of the fact that Kooperativa has been with this key cultural event since almost the very beginning. Financial partners are important but such events could not exist without a team of people who participate on their preparation with enthusiasm. Many festivals were born and died in twenty years, IMF Český Krumlov has however proven during this period that it is organized by the right people. Quality of our cooperation keeps growing. In addition, organizers prove that every year they are not only able to attract real world’s stars but that they are also able to risk a little and invite young artists and try unusual performances and organize topical nights. This festival is simply not only of the top quality in terms of the musicians and organization but such that listeners of almost any music genre can choose ‘their’ performance. In the past two decades, the festival has proven not only that it has a right to live and claim its spot in the sun for the next at least twenty years but especially that it is a key cultural event of this country. I wish very much that its glory and importance keep growing.”

Martin Diviš, CEO and chairman of the board, Kooperativa pojišťovna, a.s., Vienna Insurance Group – general partner of IMF ČK
