Vojta Dyk & B-SIDE BAND Were the Stars of the Czech Evening

Saturday 2nd August belonged to the musical-gastronomic Czech Evening. The visitors could taste typical Czech dishes and beverages and listen to music of different genres which was played on both the small and the big stage in the Brewery Garden.

The ensemble “Jižani” (“The Southerners”) played South Bohemian brass music, the swing Gustav Brom Czech Radio Big Band accompanied the excellent soloists Dasha, Ondřej Ruml Dáša Zázvůrková and Andrea Zimányiová and the audience also listened to “Mladá dudácká muzika Strakonice” (“Young Bagpipe Music Strakonice”) and Jiří Janoušek’s “Cimbálová muzika” (“Dulcimer Music”). “The choice of the Czech Evening at the festival is a good thing as the people can remember Czech and South Bohemian traditions,” said the bandleader of the ensemble Jižani, trumpeter Miroslav Dvořák. The main star of the evening was singer Vojta Dyk in an original combination with Josef Buchta’s B-SIDE BAND. Just before the concert the wind started blowing and the clouds which were gathering gave rise to worries. But somebody probably heard the wishes of the viewers and organizers and the storm only passed by Český Krumlov and the evening became even more impressive under a sky lit by lightening. Vojta Dyk literally had the viewers out off their seats – during the concert they were swinging in their seats and at the end they were dancing under the stage. Vojta Dyk performed not only as a singer but also as a conductor in the case of Dvořák’s composition From the New World. Compositions of different genres were accompanied his witty remarks and improvisation. “As a child I sang Carmina Burana at this festival and after that I kept on singing it and conducting it. I grew up not far from here, in Římov, and we often went on trips to Český Krumlov. I also went through the town later on when we were canoeing. I like the genius loci of Český Krumlov and the amazing mustiness of the old times by which the town is infused.” Was the introductory word in which Vojta Dyk addressed Český Krumlov an improvisation? “It is always an improvisation. You can repeat some jokes but you will find out that you no longer enjoy them. Therefore, I always try to arrive at concerts early, absorb the atmosphere of the town, become acquainted with the local people and then pass on the experiences during the concert.” Although a festival of classical music is not a typical environment for the band, the B-SIDE BAND frequently transcends genres and at the concert in Český Krumlov the audience heard jazz, swing, classical music and even opera, adapted for a swing orchestra. “We try to perform across genres and not be bound by anything. Our repertoire is constantly developing and changing, some things originate directly on stage. I can’t say what we will do in a year, and in my opinion that’s the way it should be,” said the bandleader of the B-SIDE BAND Josef Buchta. “This festival is one of the best we have in the Czech Republic. It was a beautiful experience for us, from which I will personally live for several weeks to come until the next concert,” added Josef Buchta.
