Swinging Vojtěch Dyk with the B-Side Band at the Czech Evening

On Saturday 2nd August a multigenre musical mixture connected with the tasting of national culinary specialities titled Czech Evening will take place on two stages in the Brewery Garden.

On one stage, which will be dedicated to traditional national music, representatives of dulcimer and brass music will perform – the South Bohemian brass band Jižani (“The Southerners”), Mladá dudácká muzika Strakonice (“Young Bagpipe Music Strakonice”) and Cimbálová muzika Jiřího Janouška (“Jiří Janoušek’s Dulcimer Music”). On the second stage, the Gustav Brom Czech Radio Big Band and its soloists will perform and the highlight of the evening will be the performance by Vojtěch Dyk with Josef Buchta’s swing B-Side Band from Brno.

Vojtěch Dyk is a phenomenon of recent years. He has extraordinary vocal disposition, immense musicality, acting talent and charisma. He started with music already as a small boy when he attended lessons at a music school. At the age of seven he sang in a choir, played the violin and later started playing the piano. However, he did not want to practice so out of all those activities he continued only with singing. At the age of fifteen he started with theatre acting and later studied at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU). The list of roles and theatres in which he appeared as a guest would be long. And in spite of the fact that Dyk was even a member of the theatre company of the National Theatre, his heart belongs to the La Fabrika Theatre in Holešovice. An interesting record originated here which deservedly brought Dyk the nomination for Best Singer in the Angel Awards (“Ceny Anděl” – Czech Music Awards).

The B-Side Band was founded in the spring of 2006 by trumpeter and band leader Josef Buchta. It consists of 18 top instrumentalists and during its gradual rise has created a strong tradition and a strong base of supporters. Currently it is one of the most sought-after musical ensembles of its genre and is starting to extend its sphere of activity also to foreign stages.

The band’s repertoire is rich in terms of genres and focuses mainly on creating modern and colourful big band sound, pulling the listeners into the action by means of energy and spectacular arrangement. It also includes world hits which the B-Side Band together with Dyk performs in an adapted, swing style. Their program in Český Krumlov will consist of a rich musical spectrum ranging from jazz and swing to melodic blues, lyrical and rock ballads as well as hard rock, compositions with electronic elements and even disco.

The festival will also offer a traditional musical evening, this time dedicated to Czech authors and performers. The Homage to Czech Musicals will take place on 9th August in the Brewery Garden and the audience will hear a selection from Czech musicals and melodies from Czech musical films performed by popular musical singers and accompanied by the Festival Orchestra under the baton of conductor Kryštof Marek. The concert is a tribute to Czech composers and lyricists whose work belongs to the jewels of Czech musical production. The dramaturgy focuses on musicals from several decades, from the 1960s till the present.
