Festival overture inaugurated three-week musical showcase

The hit New York, New York concluded the opening concert of the 27th year of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov in the Summer Riding Hall of the castle garden. Violoncellist Jiří Bárta, singers from Broadway Christiane Noll and Hugh Panaro, South Korean soprano Sooyeon Kim, Schola Gregoriana Pragensis and singer Jan Smigmator made an appearance. The above-mentioned artists performed compositions by Mozart, Bach, Saint-Saëns, Puccini and songs from the musical The Phantom of the Opera. The aria “Song to the Moon” from Dvořák’s opera Rusalka interpreted by Sooyeon Kim had a favourable response. Daniel Klement, a talented visually impaired pupil of the Jaroslav Ježek Elementary Art School in Prague, played the clarinet. Other artists played different instruments and sang in other parts of the garden and the atmosphere was complemented by lights and projections which created the scenery for opera and musical numbers. They, for example, evoked the atmosphere of Japan during Cio-Cio-San’s aria, created the stage set for The Phantom of the Opera or resembled a big American city during the swing part of the evening. Jan Smigmator, who has been visiting the festival for a number of years as a viewer and who, for example, recalls two concerts of phenomenal trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, had the idea to end with the composition New York, New York. “At the rehearsal I sang the first phrase and then handed over the microphone to the singers from Broadway and as they are professionals, they immediately joined in,” said Jan Smigmator, who will perform at the festival during the swing evening on 4th August with Dasha and the Felix Slováček Big Band.
