The musical evening has become an integral part of the program of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov. This time it is the turn of the “Broadway meets Broadway” project, which will be an interesting confrontation. Soloists from Broadway theatres in New York Capathia Jenkins and Hugh Panaro, whom the audience in Český Krumlov knows very well by now, will perform side by side with Czech musical singers. These will be Michaela Gemrotová, opera and musical singer and interpreter of the main roles in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, Angelique and Ball of Vampires and a laureate of a number of competitions, and Marian Vojtko, Slovak tenor opera and musical singer, who has been based in the Czech Republic for a long time and has had engagements at Prague theatres Broadway, Hybernia and Karlín Musical Theatre. Here he has performed in the musicals Cleopatra (Caesar and Marcus Antonius), The Three Musketeers, (Cardinal Richelieu, Athos), Angelique (Joffrey de Peyrac) and Mona Lisa (Leonardo da Vinci). He received the Thalia Award in 2010 for the role of Baron Munchausen. However, it was the double role in the Broadway musical Jekyll & Hyde by composer Frank Wildhorn, staged in the Karlín Musical Theatre, which brought him the greatest success. The author himself described Marian Vojtko as one of the best interpreters of this double role in the world. A rich program consisting of a selection from the most popular musicals will be prepared. The soloists will be accompanied by the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice under the baton of American conductor Randall Craig Fleischer.

The Brooklyn-born and raised actress, Capathia Jenkins, most recently starred as ‘Medda’ in the hit Disney production of Newsies on Broadway. She has also been seen on Broadway in The Civil War, where she created the role of Harriet Jackson, The Look of Love, Caroline, Or Change, and Martin Short – Fame Becomes Me, where she sang ‘Stop the Show’ and brought the house down every night.  Ms. Jenkins starred Off-Broadway in the revival of Godspell and (mis) Understanding Mammy for which she received a Drama Desk Nomination.  In December, Ms. Jenkins was seen on the live NBC production of The Wiz. An active concert artist, Ms. Jenkins has appeared with orchestras around the world including the Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony (with Marvin Hamlisch), Philly Pops, Cincinnati Pops, National Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Utah Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony and the Hong Kong Philharmonic and will return twice in 2016 as a guest soloist with the Festival Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic.  Capathia had the great honor of performing in the ‘Broadway Ambassadors to Cuba’ concert as part of the Festival De Teatro De La Habana. She returned to Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops in November, 2015 and recently sang in a Tribute to Marvin Hamlisch at the Library of Congress. She can be heard on the following film soundtracks: Nine, Chicago, Legally Blonde 2.

Hugh Panaro has been described as “the leader of Broadway’s dwindling supply of great leading men.” Critically lauded and adored by fans, he demonstrates versatility, charisma, tremendous vocal talent, and, in the words of one former costar, movie star good looks. His first role, Friedrich, in a regional production of The Sound of Music, came when he was twelve. In 1988, Hugh originated the role of Marius Pontmercy in the first national touring production of Les Misérables, moving up to the Broadway company several months later. He was then cast by Hal Prince as Raoul de Chagny, the romantic young hero in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical The Phantom of the Opera. In 1999, Hugh returned to the Majestic Theatre, this time to don the iconic mask in The Phantom of the Opera. Following the tour, Hugh drew praise for performances in Gentleman Prefer Blondes and Merrily We Roll Along in Los Angeles and as Anthony Hope in the Kennedy Center’s 2002 production of Sweeney Todd. In 2008, he starred as Jean Valjean in the Walnut Street Theatre’s outstanding production of Les Misérables, a role which earned him praise from audiences and reviewers alike, as well as the Barrymore award.  On September 7, 2010, Hugh returned to Broadway’s Majestic Theatre to again play the iconic Phantom and led the show’s historic 25th anniversary performance. In 2012, he was the recipient of the prestigious Edwin Forrest Award. During an extended break from Phantom in 2013, he was again seen as Jean Valjean in The Muny’s summer production of Les Misérables (opposite friend and Side Show costar Norm Lewis).

In 2014 Michaela Gemrotová was cast for the title role of Christine Daaé in the world-renowned musical The Phantom of the Opera, which is on show at the GOJA Music Hall in Prague. She also made an appearance in one of the main roles in the Czech version of the world-famous musical The Vampires’ Ball. She performed in the musicals Angelika, The Man in the Iron Mask and Casanova at the Broadway Theatre in Prague. She cooperates with leading Czech orchestras (Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice, South Czech Philharmonic, Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra etc.). She has made recordings for the Czech Radio, Italy Recording and the Arts master studio. Opera is at the core of Michaela Gemrotová’s repertoire. Not only on theatre stages but also at concerts, where she most often interprets world opera arias. Viewers had the opportunity to see her on stages in many European countries (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, France, Italy, England, Poland etc.). For vocal recitals she rehearsed song cycles and works by B. Smetana, A. Dvořák, F. Schubert, F. Liszt, V. Bellini, W. A. Mozart, G. Puccini, G. Verdi and many others. She has made an appearance in many opera roles, e.g. W. A. Mozart – The Magic Flute (Pamina, Papagena), Le nozze di Figaro (Susanna), Don Giovanni (Zerlina, Donna Anna), C. Gounod – Faust (Marguerite), Romeo and Juliet (Juliet), A. Dvořák – The Jacobin (Terinka), Rusalka (Rusalka – First Wood Nymph), G. Verdi – La Traviata (Violetta Valéry), Falstaff (Nanetta), B. Smetana – The Kiss (Barče), The Bartered Bride (Esmeralda), G. Puccini – Turandot (Liu), Gianni Schicchi (Lauretta), L. Janáček – The Cunning Little Vixen, V. Bellini – La sonnambula and others.

Marian Vojtko entered the world of musicals when he appeared in S. Sondheim’s Little Night Music. During his studies he was cast into Svoboda’s musical Dracula, where he sang the role of Priest and Steven both in the first and second release; in the renewed premiere he interpreted the role of the bloodthirsty count. In the Slovak production of Landa’s musical The Pied Piper he performed the title role and in the musical Hair the role of Angel. The alternation in the title role of the Count of Monte Cristo in Karel Svoboda’s musical of the same name brought him success on the musical scene in Prague for the first time. From 2010 he appeared in the title role of Zdeněk Barták’s spectacular musical Baron Prášil, for which he received the Thalia Award in 2010. However, it was the double role in the musical Jekyll & Hyde by composer Frank Wildhorn which has brought him the greatest success so far. However, Marian Vojtko has also been active on the opera scene for a long time. His repertoire includes the role of Rossini’s Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Handel’s Serse, Janáček’s baron Adolf (The Beginning of a Novel), Puccini’s Pang (Turandot) and other tenor parts. At the State Opera in Prague he interpreted the role of Vít in the opera La Roulette. He shows his artistic versatility also in the main male role of Count Edwin in Emmerich Kálmán’s operetta The Csardas Princess, count Bolo Baraňský in Oskar Nedbal’s operetta Polish Blood or as officer Champlatreux in the operetta Mam’zelle Nitouche. His first solo CD released in 2010 includes popular songs, opera arias and musical hits.

With three Music Director positions, arrangements and compositions played around the world, a demanding guest conducting schedule, major awards, and a career spanning four continents, Randall Craig Fleischer is making a substantial impact. Mr. Fleischer has appeared as a guest conductor with many major orchestras in the United States and internationally including engagements with the Boston Pops, China Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Houston Symphony, Utah Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Festival Cesky Krumov (Czech Republic) and many others. Mr. Fleischer first came to international attention when, while serving his first of five years as Assistant, then Associate conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, he conducted Dvorak’s Cello Concerto with Mstislav Rostropovich as soloist during the NSO’s 1990 tour of Japan and the U.S.S.R.  Active as a composer and arranger, Mr. Fleischer is a national leader in the area of symphonic rock and world music fusion.  His works and arrangements have been played by numerous major orchestras around the world.  His work “Symphony in Step” written for the dance company “Step Afrika” was premiered by the Anchorage Symphony and performed at the Atlas Theater in D.C.  Mr. Fleischer made his debut with New York City Opera conducting The Magic Flute. A passionate educator, Fleischer has co-authored several instructional pieces for children in collaboration with his wife, comedian Heidi Joyce.  Winner of Newsweek Magazine’s “Parent’s Choice Award” for his groundbreaking CD ROM of Peter and the Wolf, Mr. Fleischer stands alone as the only American conductor to receive this prestigious award.

The first records of concerts by the Teplice Orchestra date from 1828, but the official date of its founding is regarded as the 14^th April 1838. At the end of the 19^th century the orchestra had over 90 members and among its conductors were renowned personalities, such as Felix von Weingartner, Richard Strauss and Siegfried Wagner. Since 1997 it has been led by the Canadian conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe. In the last ten years the orchestra’s activities at home and abroad have markedly intensified. This season the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice will perform over one hundred and forty concerts, out of which forty are abroad in countries such as Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain and Switzerland. Among the cities the Philharmonic will visit are important European centres: Munich, Berlin, Basel, Paris, Valencia. In the autumn of 2013 the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice went on concert tour to Asia, visiting Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. Among its audiences in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia and in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, were members of royal families. Some of the best contemporary artists come to Teplice to perform with the orchestra, among them Misha Maisky, Sharon Kam and Shlomo Mintz. The orchestra gets invited to prestigious music festivals at home and abroad: to the Prague Spring, Janáček’s May, Janáček’s Hukvaldy, theTerezín Festival of Forbidden Music, Český Krumlov Festival and Ema Destinnová Festival. The Teplice Philharmonic also runs every May and June the Ludwig van Beethoven Music Festival, founded in 1964; it now spreads over the whole of the North Bohemian region.
