A Selection from Czech Musicals and Melodies from Czech Musical Films

The 23rd year of the International Music Festival Český Krumlov will offer a traditional musical evening, this time dedicated to Czech authors and performers. The Homage to Czech Musicals will remember Karel Svoboda’s work, the Semafor Theatre and the group Lucie. The selection from Czech musicals and melodies from Czech musical films will be performed by the very best from the musical stages in Prague accompanied by the Festival Orchestra under the baton of Kryštof Marek.

The program will include performances by Bára Basiková, Ilona Csáková, Leona Machálková, Petr Kolář, Jan Kříž, Václav Noid Bárta and Pavel Vítek. The audience will hear popular pieces from the musicals Dracula, Hamlet, Joan of Arc, If a Thousand Clarinets (Kdyby tisíc klarinetů), Cleopatra, Monte Christo, A Night at Karlstein (Noc na Karlštejně), Hop Pickers (Starci na chmelu), The Three Musketeers, A Christmas Carol, Bigger Than Small Amount of Love (Větší než malé množství lásky), Crime in a Music Hall (Zločin v šantánu).

The concert is a tribute to Czech composers and lyricists whose work belongs to the jewels of Czech musical production. The dramaturgy focuses on musicals from several decades, from the 1960s till the present. It includes work by Karel Svoboda, Jiří Štaidl, Zdeňek Borovec, Jiří Suchý, Jiří Šlitr, Ondřej Soukup, Gabriela Osvaldová, Jiří Malásek, the group Lucie, Jiří Voskovec & Jan Werich, Michal David and other authors. Most of the 15 chosen titles nowadays belong to the legends of the Czech musical theatre and film. The films “Lemonade Joe” (Limonádový Joe), “If a Thousand Clarinets” and “Hop Pickers“ happen to celebrate 50 years from their making this year.
