On Tuesday 7^th August Jiří Bárta performed an interesting contrasting program – two of Bach’s suites for cello solo, no. 2 in D minor and no. 4 in E-flat major, and in the second half of the concert sonata op. 8 by Zoltán Kodály, which is much sought-after by cellists. As he himself told us, he had been spending a lot of time with Bach’s suites in the past year. In fact, he is recording all six of them for his album. “I am totally absorbed by it, it is my life. There is only one more suite to record. I decided to go back to old music because recently I dedicated myself primarily to contemporary music and also to lesser-known authors of the 19^th century. So, I had a feeling it was time to go back to the Baroque period. Now I am really interested, for example, in Alessandro Scarlatti’s sonatas.” As opposed to the originally announced program, in the end instead of Suite No. 4 Bárta played No. 5 in C minor. “I recorded it just ten days ago so it was fresh and it is actually probably my favourite out of the six suites,” explained the cellist. The delighted audience solicited an encore, which was the famous prelude from Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G major.
