Guitarist and musicologist Jesús Castro Balbi presented music with a tinge of Peru and Latin America

On Wednesday 19th July Peruvian concert guitarist Jesús Castro Balbi performed at the Masquerade Hall. He presented mainly rarely played works by South American authors. His play had a tinge of Peru and Latin America. He was really looking forward to his performance, “I am really glad that I had the opportunity to perform in this beautiful town and at your music festival, which prides itself on the participation of leading musical artists. This concert was a part of the activities which are organized as part of the 95th anniversary of Czech-Peruvian diplomatic relations. With the program I paid tribute to the Masquerade Hall at the chateau where I played. My wish was to transmit some of our Peruvian feelings and spontaneity to the Czech audience.” The audience first heard a suite by Johann Sebastian Bach. Next it was the turn of Matías Maestro, an author of the Post-Baroque period, with his two sonatas and a fandango. After the intermission Balbi presented music by his compatriots. In the second half of the evening the audience heard several minuets by Pedro Ximenes Abril-Tirado and an anonymous sonata of Peruvian origin. At the end of the program the guitarist played compositions of Afro-Peruvian origin with a combination of rhythms and emotions of the inhabitants of the African continent, which has created and preserved a very specific musical character from the colonial era to our time. “I appreciate this music very much and I really like it,” added Jesús Castro Balbi.
