On Saturday 28th July the audience in the Brewery Garden in Český Krumlov listened to melodies from musicals. The first half of the concert was dedicated to legendary American conductor Leonard Bernstein, whose 100th anniversary of his birth the entire world is celebrating this year. The artists performed the most famous melodies from his works including, of course, a selection from his most famous musical West Side Story, about which soloist Dee Rioscioli said, “Bernstein was a visionary. For me, West Side Story is the most beautiful piece. Time has no influence on it, it will withstand everything.” The four soloists from Broadway theatres were completed by Christiane Noll, who sang an extremely demanding aria from the operetta Candide. Hugh Panaro made his little dream come true – he had always wanted to sing Tony and in Český Krumlov he sang at least his famous song Maria. Darius de Haas visited Český Krumlov for the first time and according to his own words he was amazed by the history which the town radiates. The soloists were accompanied by the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice under the baton of American conductor Randall Craig Fleischer, who was lucky enough to meet Bernstein at work. The second half also belonged to musical melodies but this time by different authors. The audience listened to songs from The Lion King, Les Misérables and Evita. Ben E. King’s song Stand By Me not only earned a thunderous applause but it was also the beginning of the spectacular finale of the evening. The brilliantly performed arias Phantom of the Opera and Music of the Night from the musical Phantom of the Opera won unrelenting standing ovations and requests for encores. And the audience was rewarded by several of them. ABBA’s Dancing Queen convinced even those, who had resisted until the last moment, to dance and sing.
